Exactly. With no vegetation growing for years the rains will destroy the soil and take it with the flooding. Too bad there's no water underground.

There is...The artesian basin lies beneath almost one third of the country and is welled also. It's dropping though as the rain isn't seeping down there either. It's a catch 22 situation.

Great Artesian Basin
The Great Artesian Basin (GAB), located in Australia, is the largest and deepest artesian basin in the world, stretching over 1,700,000 square kilometres (660,000 sq mi), with measured water temperatures ranging from 30–100 °C (86–212 °F). The basin provides the only source of fresh water through much of inland Australia. The Basin underlies 22% of the continent, including the states and territories of Queensland (most of), the Northern Territory (the south-east corner of), South Australia (the north-east part of), and New South Wales (northern part of). The basin is 3,000 metres (9,800 ft) deep in places and is estimated to contain 64,900 cubic kilometres (15,600 cu mi) of groundwater. The Great Artesian Basin Coordinating Committee (GABCC) coordinates activity between the various levels of government and community organisations.
Thank you wikitextbot, this is awesome!
Holy smokes, it's the largest and deepest basin in the world! It seems like they have no choice but to do some more wells until the drought ends. If the drought doesn't end, then what? Just more fires all the time. The destruction will be almost incomprehensible.
Yeah, it's a big basin although only has so much pressure so drilling too many wells ends up affecting the overall pressure. There is an issue with water supply all over the world as there is only so much drinkable water available. The planet can only generate so much is what I mean. And yet we waste water all the time as if it's an endless commodity.
Oh yes, coming from a farm background I'm very aware of the world water situation and it's one of the few things that we in modern societies can really make a huge difference by the way we use or don't use water on an individual basis.
But at least over here that message is not being taught or emphasized so people waste thousands of gallons each year.
Same here...People hosing down their driveways when others don't have enough to have a shower. Weird huh? Still, people just don't seem to care. There's a guy not too far from me whose front of his house is virtually dirt, no grass at all, just scattered weeds and yet there he is, every second day watering it. Dumb-ass.
lol..I shouldn't laugh at that guy but he is out there watering weeds? Yeah, that's moronic!
Yep, a sign of the times...Moron is the new black. 🙄
