African Garri flour.

in OCD3 years ago

Hello to my hive families. Okay before I go to my main write up today, I would love to express something. So today I helped a friend set up an hive account, even helped her with some of the write up, at the end of it she got credited more than my last 2 post. It was discouraging but I just pray this proves me wrong. like I was thinking 'maybe this isn't your thing, Gift?'. Lol just expressing my feelings but I pray I get credited in this.

Well for today I want to share the little experience I got at my mum's village last month. it was around mid February when my mum asked we go spend some days at the village, but currently ASUU ( Academic staff union of universities) are on strike, meaning schools are literally closed down, no lectures. Our lecturers are the union members that's why the is no lectures. I had to follow her down to village. While at the village we went to the farm ( cassava farm) we uprooted some cassava.
so today I want to share with you the processes involve in making Garri (An African flour use for swallow) from cassava.

After we uprooted the cassava, we took it home, peeled all of it. Washed them but not with soap just water and a sponge ( by applying some pressure shea) it will come out clean.
After washing we took it to the mill ( it was local, where it's only meant for things like this, it's more common in the village than in the cities, what I mean is that these local ones are common in the village, while in the cities we have bigger milling centers).

Right there in the mill the owners smashed it for us, it was well blended, then it was poured into small bags and set into cassava dryer machine to dry. By the next day it was ready we paid the millers #400(naira) for their services. I mean you would imagine how cheap it was, yeah it's in the village and the machines they were using are local ones.
Took our blended tried cassava back home. My grandma asked me to set fire, which I did but before then the dried cassava was sieved into a big bowl.

So after this someone will have to sit near the fire place and a wide pot will be placed on the fire stand. Well this is a picture of my mum and sister frying the garri...

You can see from the picture, the fire stand is made of clay soil, moulded into that shape.
Small amount of the dried cassava was poured inside the pot every time the first dries very well and ready to be reserved.
When done with all these the freshly made garri will be spread out so to cool then later put into bags or containers. Ours was not much so it was served in a container for family use.
Now after preparing the garri, I want to personally teach you how to make use of the garri Incase you don't know, after getting this garri, first thing you do is to boil water then pour the water inside a bowl depending on the size of garri you want to eat, then put the garri flour inside the water according to the size of water, then get your turning stick to stire the garri and water, so it would blend. Oh my gosh you get your homely made garri ready to be served with a nice soup.

This is just a random google image.

Trust me I've been in the city all my life so this was a first hand experience and I loved it.

Hello @giftto. Thanks for sharing the process of how garri is achieved. I really like the massive bowl size that is used in the sieving and cooking.

This type of food post would be best suited for the Foodies Bee Hive Community. The OCD Community is for general topics that do not fit in any of the other communities.

Also, it is very important that you always cite your sources. Please be careful using random images on Google because there could be a copyright violation. It’s best to use websites like Pixabay that allows use of images for free.

Thank you ~
