A few days ago I showed you a small morrocoy that I found walking around my backyard and as they have a great ability to get out of sight I was surprised when I saw him sunbathing on a stone that is inside a small pond which has remained full of water thanks to the fact that it has been raining a lot all these days.
As you can see in the following images the little reptile is calmly sunbathing until it notices my presence; they know that they must perform this task daily in order to have a healthy and strong shell since sunlight helps them to fix the calcium they consume daily.
There are things that may be contradictory with respect to these land turtles since these animals are considered a symbol of tenacity, health and long life so it is very common that some people have them as pets; but there is a very important detail that must be taken into account. Normally turtles are carriers of salmonella bacteria, both in the skin and in the shell so we must handle them with caution, such as wearing gloves and washing your hands after touching them, especially with children, we must be very careful not to put your hands in your mouth while handling them; the number of people who get sick from this bacteria is millions annually and that's what I meant when I mentioned that it was contradictory because this symbol of health and long life can end up sending us to the hospital.
Although it may not seem like it, these turtles can climb slopes and for this they use their nails, if the slope is very steep they end up going backwards but among the stones they can climb 90° angles without any problem. They do not usually spend much time in the water since as their name indicates they are land turtles; another thing I learned on this occasion from a neighbor's comment is that their shell is supposed to be completely smooth since when they form lumps it is due to poor feeding and that usually happens with those that are in captivity.
Something that can be noticed in the shell is a pattern of geometric figures very well defined and organized despite the curves and cuts it has. It is very obvious that the shell is the protection of the turtle but nature did not forget to capture its art in it.
When these reptiles decide to take a break it can be very long from our point of view as some last for weeks without moving; specifically those that are in an adult stage. As for feeding they are herbivores and scavengers also feed on fruits and vegetables and I think that's what attracted this one; I have a place where I put all the kitchen scraps to keep the soil fertilized.
As I understand this is an endangered species as it is used to prepare something called here in my country, morrocoy pie fortunately it is tradition to prepare this dish only once a year specifically at the time of Holy Week, because if it were an everyday dish it would have ended up becoming completely extinct. Hace unos días les mostré un pequeño morrocoy que encontré paseando por mi patio y como ellos tienen una gran habilidad para perderse de vista me sorprendí cuando le vi tomando el sol en una piedra que está dentro de un pequeño estanque el cual se ha conservado lleno de agua gracias a que ha llovido mucho todos estos días.
Como pueden observar en las siguientes imágenes el pequeño reptil está tranquilo tomando el sol hasta que se percata de mi presencia; ellos saben que deben realizar esta tarea diariamente para poder tener un caparazón sano y fuerte ya que la luz solar les ayuda a fijar el calcio que consumen diariamente.
Hay cosas que pueden resultar contradictorias con respecto a estas tortugas de tierra ya que estos animales son considerados símbolo de tenacidad, salud y larga vida por lo que es muy común que algunas personas las tengan como mascotas; pero hay un detalle muy importante que se debe tomar en cuenta. Normalmente las tortugas son portadoras de la bacteria de la salmonella, tanto en la piel como en el caparazón por lo que debemos manipularlas con precaución; como por ejemplo usando guantes además de lavarse bien las manos después de tocarlas sobre todo con los niños hay que estar muy pendientes que no se lleven las manos a la boca mientras las manipulan; la cantidad de personas que se enferman a causa de esta bacteria es de millones anualmente y a eso me refería cuando mencione que era contradictorio ya que este símbolo de salud y larga vida puede terminar mandándonos al hospital.
Aunque no lo parezca estas tortugas pueden escalar pendientes y para ello usan sus uñas, si la pendiente es muy inclinada termina yéndose asía tras pero entre las piedras puede subir ángulos de 90° sin ningún problema. No acostumbran a pasar mucho tiempo en el agua ya que como su nombre lo indica son de tierra; otra cosa que aprendí en esta ocasión por comentario de un vecino es que supuestamente su caparazón debe ser totalmente liso ya que cuando se le forman tumultos es debido a la mala alimentación y por lo general eso ocurre con las que están en cautiverio.
Algo que se puede notar en el caparazón es un patrón de figuras geométricas muy bien definido y organizado a pesar de las curvas y cortes que este tiene. Es muy obvio que el caparazón es la protección de la tortuga pero la naturaleza no olvido plasmar su arte en él.
Cuando estos reptiles deciden tomarse un descanso puede ser muy largo desde nuestro punto de vista ya que algunos duran semanas sin moverse; específicamente los que se encuentran en una etapa adulta. En cuanto a la alimentación son herbívoros y carroñeros también se alimentan de frutas y verduras y creo que eso fue lo que atrajo a este; yo tengo un sitio donde coloco todos los desperdicios de la cocina para que la tierra se mantenga abonada.
Según entiendo este es una especie en peligro de extinción ya que es utilizado para preparar algo que llaman aquí en mi país, pastel de morrocoy afortunadamente es tradición preparar este plato una sola vez al año específicamente en la época de semana santa; ya que si fuese un plato cotidiano ya hubiese terminado por extinguirse totalmente. That's a nice turtle you have there. We don't have them roaming around freely as the climate is not suitable for that, so I can only see them in the zoo. However, OCD is for topics that don't fit in any other community and should be used when you don't find a niche community for your post.
