I'm here on Hive! My Introduction

in OCD3 years ago

Hi! I'm Mike and this is my introduction and first post on hive.

A little about myself... I live in the UK with my wife and 2 children. I work as a software engineer doing JavaScript mainly, but I dabble in a lot of things. I'm very interested in the Rust programming language and like to play with it in my spare time. I have always loved films, gaming and computers and I try to give each some time when I can.

History

Ever since I was about 5 or 6, I was fascinated by computers. I would watch my uncle play computer games for hours. At that time he had an Amstrad CPC 464 and when he got up to go downstairs I jumped on and started to learn to play myself.

Soon enough we had a computer at home (an Amstrad CPC 6128) and I learned BASIC from the manual. I was soon able to write a few little programs, filling the screen with flashing colours.
A few years later we had an Atari STe and many hours of games were played as well as some programming.

It wasn't too long after that we owned our first PC. I played a lot of games on it, some real classics, as well as some really fun LAN party's with friends.

As time went on I went and did a course on C/C++ and Visual Basic as well as playing with x86 assembly at home. It was around this time that I also got into Linux. It was quite different to DOS and Windows, but I quickly found that I enjoyed the freedom and vast range of software you could run on it.

After going to university and then getting a job, I was working in C++ daily. This continued through a few jobs until I moved into a role that required JavaScript. After picking it up it's still the language I'm using mostly at work. ES6 and TypeScript are both vying for some attention as well though.

How did I get here?

Over the past few years, crypto and blockchain have really interested me. The concept of decentralised consensus is amazing and I love hearing about new consensus mechanisms.

It was the recent trend in NFT's and more specifically NFT gaming that led me to Hive.
Splinterlands came up in a search and so I started playing just a few weeks ago.
Soon I was keen to learn a little more about the blockchain that ran the game.

It would be great to learn more about how Hive works and try interfacing with it's APIs. Layer 2 apps on Hive sound like a simple but powerful idea and I'd like to learn more.

I never really came across Steem (maybe i read an article or two, but didn't realise what the system was) and so it was nice to read how Hive rewards it's content creators.

So here I am, making the obligatory intro post. I've managed to power up a small amount of Hive, transfer some to Hive Engine and trade some for a few different game currencies. I've started playing dCity, dCrops and Rising Star as well.
I'm still not quite sure what the etiquette is on upvotes, etc but I'm trying to do the right things.

What would I like to achieve

It would be nice to blog a bit on some of the subjects above, it's not something I've really done before. Although, time is often short and I'm pretty good at procrastinating. I'm enjoying learning about and playing the games here on Hive so documenting some of that might be a good place to start.

Regardless though, I've managed to do this intro and say hello to you all.
Thanks for taking the time to read a little about me.

Welcome to Hive! Pleasure to meet a fellow IT geek! @cdrbushmills

Thank you @ninahaskin. Always a pleasure to meet another geek 😁

What kind of geeky things do you enjoy?

Welcome to the Hive community @cdrbushmills!
We sincerely hope you find everything you are looking for and have found a new home here.

Seven suggestions to consider:

  1. Guard your passwords carefully, and only publish with the posting key,
  2. Use your active key only for wallet transactions, and Keychain,
  3. The owner password is only used to reset compromised passwords,
  4. DO NOT lose your passwords; copy and store offline,
  5. Do not publish other people's work, be it photos or written, without credit, and be sure to source all of your work, even if it is your own.
  6. An introduceyourself tag is used only once, and
  7. Do Not open any links in memos or comments that you do not know who they belong to. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is, so the old saying goes. There is nothing free here.

I found you because @brittandjosie and @jamerussell from @heyhaveyamet presented and promoted your publication to get more exposure and help you grow faster.

If you find yourself overwhelmed and need some guidance, or if you have any questions, there are informed Hivians available who can help you; you can click to go to The Terminal in Discord here:

Have fun and happy Hiving!

Thank you @jamerussell for the welcome. Those suggestions are very much appreciated, especially as I learn what the various keys and passwords are for.

A big thank you as well for promoting me, I'm sure I will be jumping into the Discord at some point as I've already found it would be good to be able to quickly ask and get answers to questions as they come up.

I am actually looking forward to you coming into The Terminal, as I am studying all of the languages you are already using; but I am still a beginner @cdrbushmills.

That's awesome 😊

I would love to post some dev tutorials if I can get round to it. Does JavaScript have a community on Hive?

I will try and jump on the Discord tomorrow and say hi 👋

Are you using Peakd at the moment @cdrbushmills? If not, just change the URL website itself to https://peakd.com and up on the right, there is a set of headphones right next to the edit pencil, that is a private chat that Peakd started;
hop on there for a minute, it is not audio, it's just private chat.

Just about to have some food, but I will pick up with you tomorrow either in a Peakd chat or in the Discord 👍

I would prefer Discord if you'd like, The Terminal is also a fantastic place to learn @cdrbushmills.

Hi @cdrbushmills, welcome onboard.

You've arrived at the right place, here you can put your knoledge to work as there is a lot of room for programming at the Hive blockchain. I'm sure you will soon find something to play with.

You may find useful a visit here: https://hiveprojects.io/

Wishing you the best, will see you at splinterlands arena (I'm playing with an alt account @artemisa7).

Cheers

Thank you. I will be sure to check out that site as I try to expand my knowledge of the chain.

I'm hoping to get back to Splinterlands, seems Rising Star has been taking focus the last few days. Need to get back on earning my daily rewards 😁

Hello @cdrbushmills! This is @indayclara from @ocd (Original Content Decentralized) team. We saw that you already posted your first blog here in Hive! Congratulations and welcome!

Great to know that playing Splinterlands led you to Hive. There is so much more that you can learn here and at the same time you can also share your knowledge in this platform. Here is a useful guide to what Hive is all about: Hive User Guide.

It's also best to subscribe to Communities you like and share your blogs there to have a wider range of audience. Or you can check out the Communities Incubation Program. If you are looking for tips and information as a Hive newbie, click here: Newbie guide. If you have questions, you can hop into Discord server and we'll gladly answer your questions.

Also, letting you know since content on the Hive platform is monetized, using other people’s ideas or images could be considered as an offense and which is also viewed in a serious light on the blockchain. Here is a useful collection of resources about how plagiarism and abuse is viewed and handled on Hive.

Congratulations @cdrbushmills! You have completed the following achievement on the Hive blockchain and have been rewarded with new badge(s) :

You received more than 10 upvotes.
Your next target is to reach 50 upvotes.

You can view your badges on your board and compare yourself to others in the Ranking

Hive Power Up Month - Feedback from Day 25

Welcome. I am new also, and have yet to write my formal introductory post. It's nice to see another person with an IT background here. There is a learning curve, but it's an interesting ecosystem with many associated projects, I am learning. One thing that baffles me is the economics of the hive. I wonder if many people, even those who have been around a while, understand it. Where does the money/value come from? It seems to me that, currently, people have to literally bring it in at some point. I think for the ecosystem to be self-sustaining, it needs to create value in some way. I am not an economist, but I am a practical thinker. Maybe I just don't understand the whole thing yet, though. I am only two seconds old in terms of the hive although I have done a lot of reading.

I feel like more projects that generate value and help ease the on boarding process will make hive even cooler!
