Thanks for all the memories (and headackes) 2006-2021 | #StoryTime [ENG/ESP]

Hey Hive community, how are you? It’s been a while since the last time i posted something, but that has a reason to be ... Our beloved companion of years here at home stopped working, but this time FOR REAL.

A few days ago (specifically the weekend of Friday, April 9) there were many blackouts due to electrical failures, I want to think that maybe the voltage regulator and protector didn’t do their jobs, although certainly this poor computer was in need of a change since years ago.

Hey comunidad de Hive, ¿Cómo están? Hace algo de tiempo que no he estado por acá, pero eso tiene razón de ser… Nuestra querida compañera de años acá en casa dejó de funcionar, pero esta vez en serio.

Hace unos días (específicamente el fin de semana del viernes 9 de abril) hubo muchos apagones por fallas eléctricas, quiero pensar que a lo mejor el regulador de voltaje y protector no hicieron su trabajo, aunque ciertamente ya a esta pobre computadora le tocaba cambio desde hace años.

With the passage of time it was updated little by little, increasing the amount of RAM, changing the processor, increasing storage with the installation of a new hard drive (on several occasions changed due to damage caused by electrical failures), and even the OS for obvious reasons. I remember when a decade ago (God, I feel old saying that), a technician had done a system upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7 in 2010, shortly after Windows 7 was released, the biggest change I’ve noticed on the PC, it felt much faster.

Con el paso del tiempo se fue actualizando poco a poco, aumentando la cantidad de RAM, cambio de procesador, incremento en almacenamiento con la instalación de un disco duro nuevo (en varias ocasiones cambiado por daños causados por fallas eléctricas), e inclusive de sistema operativo. Recuerdo cuando hace una década (Dios, que me siento viejo al decir eso), un técnico había hecho una actualización del sistema de Windows Vista a Windows 7 en el 2010, poco tiempo después de Windows 7 haber salido al mercado, el mayor cambio que he notado en la PC, se sentía mucho más rápida.

Thanks to this PC I was able to experiment a lot; I learned to install Windows and I was able to play with different LINUX distributions, I repaired and reinstalled many softwares and firmwares of phones of different brands (iOS, Android, Windows Phone ...) I really have very good memories with this computer, but also many other moments in which I cried in despair ... You see, the computer for a few years hung out of nowhere…

Gracias a esta PC pude experimentar mucho; aprendí a instalar Windows y pude jugar con una que otra distribución de LINUX, reparé y reinstalé muchos softwares y firmwares de teléfonos de diferentes marcas (iOS, Android, Windows Phone…) realmente tengo muy buenos recuerdos con este equipo, aunque también muchos otros momentos en los que lloré de desesperación… Verán, la computadora desde hace unos años se colgaba de la nada…

The most painful memory I have was when I lost the progress I had made with my thesis in November 2018, just a few weeks before presentation, I wanted to die ... Fortunately I had a physical draft with the corrections, but having to do everything again was VERY STRESSING. Due to my vision problems, it is not very comfortable to transcribe while you try to read, I thank my mother and my ex very much who at that time helped me in that part by transcribing some paragraphs for me and sometimes dictating to me.

El recuerdo más doloroso que tengo fue cuando perdí los avances que había hecho con mi tesis en noviembre de 2018, justo a unas pocas semanas de la presentación, me quería morir… Afortunadamente tenía un borrador en físico con las correcciones, pero volver a hacer todo eso fue MUY ESTRESANTE. Por mis problemas en la vista no es muy cómodo transcribir a la vez que intentas leer; agradezco mucho a mi madre y a mi ex que para aquel entonces me ayudaron en esa parte transcribiendo por mí algunos párrafos y otras veces dictándome.

In short, I think that both my family and I made the most out of this computer, even so, it already needed a change ... it was when in November of last year (2020), a family friend came home with an excellent deal, he was selling his PC at a great price.

By then I used my phone more and my mother the computer because she makes Cake Toppers (later I will tell you and show you a little more about that), and I needed a change more than ever because I was constantly losing progress in the designs that she made . It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities and I wasn't going to miss it.

En definitiva, creo que tanto mi familia como yo exprimimos el potencial de este equipo al máximo, aun así, ya necesitaba un cambio… fue cuando en noviembre del año pasado (2020), un amigo de la familia llega a la casa con una excelente oferta, él estaba vendiendo su PC a un excelente precio.

Para ese entonces yo usaba más mi teléfono y mi madre la computadora pues ella hace Cake Toppers (después les contaré y mostraré un poco más acerca de eso), y necesitaba un cambio más que nunca porque perdía constantemente el avance en los diseños que ella realizaba. Fue una de esas oportunidades que sólo ocurren una vez en la vida y no pensaba desaprovecharla.

The point is that once I made the acquisition and changed the pc, the old one remains for me ... And well, it was precisely thanks to it that I was able to start my journey within Hive (mainly thanks to @roadstories for telling me about the platform).

I already had some money saved to change my smartphone for a better one (in fact, I was going to buy it on Monday, April 12) but that will have to wait a little longer because that day, when I go to turn on the computer, it does not start.

El punto es que una vez echo la adquisición y cambio de equipo, la vieja queda para mí… Y pues, fue justamente gracias a ella que pude iniciar mi viaje dentro de Hive (principalmente gracias a @roadstories por hablarme de la plataforma).

Ya tenía algo de dinero ahorrado para cambiar mi teléfono inteligente por uno mejor (de hecho, lo iba a comprar el lunes 12 de abril) pero eso tendrá que esperar un poco más pues ese día, cuando voy a encender la computadora, esta no arranca.

I tried changing the hard disk for a spare one I had, including the power supply, but no ... It did not detect any device that was connected to it, either by SATA nor IDE port (the ports that are on the motherboard with which it communicates with the different devices, generally related to storage). I assumed that in the worst case some component of the motherboard had been fried with the blackouts of that weekend.

Probé cambiando el disco duro por uno de repuesto que tenía, inclusive la fuente de poder, pero no… No detectaba ningún dispositivo que le conectara, ya sea por puerto SATA o IDE (los puertos que están en la tarjeta madre con los que la misma se comunica con los diferentes dispositivos, generalmente relacionados con almacenamiento). Asumí que en el peor de los casos algún componente de la tarjeta madre se hubiese freído con los apagones del fin de semana.

I had already been checking the Facebook Marketplace for several days looking for an used computer but in optimal condition since i’m an IT guy. I could take that risk because I thoroughly check the PCs. One particular post caught my attention; It included the computer, monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, and even a computer desk, and best of all, it belonged to an acquaintance.

Ya tenía varios días revisando el Marketplace de Facebook buscando una computadora usaba, pero en óptimas condiciones, como soy técnico podía tomar ese riesgo pues reviso los equipos a fondo. Una publicación en particular llamó mucho mi atención; esta incluía la computadora, el monitor, teclado, mouse, protector/regulador de corriente, cornetas y hasta una mesa, y lo mejor de todo es que era de un conocido.

I decided to go on a Monday to check the computer, and after seeing that everything was in order, I proceeded to pay my former classmate and called my uncle, who was driving my cousin's truck (so I could bring everything back home in one trip) and was able to take it home to clean and install Windows, office and other programs that I use (photoshop, illustrator and other tools).

Así fue como me dispuse ir un lunes a revisar el equipo, y luego de ver que todo estaba en orden, procedí a pagarle a mi ex compañero de clases y llamé a mi tío, que cargaba la camioneta de mi primo y pude llevarla a casa para limpiar e instalar el Windows, office y demás programas que uso.
