I admit, this is the only song that when I first heard it playing, I was devastatingly sad listening all throughout the song. Aside from the tune and the singers' beautiful vocals, the story of it made my heart broken. DAMN! It was the only word that came out from my mouth when the song ended.
This country song by Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss is a story about love, betrayal and guilt.
Guy
She put him out like the burnin' end of a midnight cigarette
She broke his heart, he spent his whole life tryin' to forget
The man is very much in love to his girl, however, the girl, threw him like a trash and betrayed him by having an affair with another man.
We watched him drink his pain away a little at a timeBut he never could get drunk enough to get her off his mind
Until the night
Pained by the unacceptable betrayal and the loss of his beloved, he indulged himself with alcohol to forget her and the pain she inflicted. But no matter how much he drank, he never forgets her.
He put that bottle to his head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away her memory
Life is short, but this time it was bigger
Than the strength he had to get up off his knees
We found him with his face down in the pillow
With a note that said, 'I'll love her till I die.'
And when we buried him beneath the willow
The angels sang a whiskey lullaby
Finally, the alcohol took its toll on him and he ended up killing himself. Death was the easiest thing for him to do rather than gaining the strength he needs to pull himself together. He was found dead with a note saying, “I’ll love her till I die” and was buried beneath the willow tree where they started to create their dreams together.
Girl
The rumors flew
but nobody knew how much she blamed herself
For years and years she tried to hide the whiskey on her breath
The rumoured cause of death of her man spread like a virus, being the talked of the town. She continued living her life and pretended she’s okay, appearing unaffected. But none of them knew how much she carried the blame on herself.
She finally drank her pain away a little at a time
But she never could get drunk enough to get him off her mind
Until the night
Trying to hide her pain and the guilt, she drank herself secretly. But as like him, she was unable to forget him no matter how much she drank.
She put that bottle to her head and pulled the trigger And finally drank away his memory Life is short, but this time it was bigger Than the strength she had to get up off her knees
Finally, the alcohol took its toll on her and she ended up killing herself. Having no strength to pull back herself together, she drank herself to death and decided to pull the trigger that ended her life. It was the easiest thing for her to forget the pain.
We found her with her face down in the pillow Clinging to his picture for dear life We laid her next to him beneath the willow While the angels sang a whiskey lullaby
She was found dead clinging to his picture as she yelps for her life. She was buried beside him beneath the willow, where they started to create their dreams.
Realization
An ill-fated ending
Too much love can kill you, as the song goes. Love may be the most wonderful feeling you will ever receive and experience, however, when it is not reciprocated, you’ll feel the most dreadful feeling.
In the song, the guy was not able to move on from his love and the girl’s betrayal. He ended up drinking alcohol which severed his depression that he ended his life. Same goes to the girl who carried the guilt all throughout those years. Both of them committed suicide due to the emotions they felt which they were not able to handle.
The song is a “Third Person Point of View”. It was clearly stated on the lyric of the song that “THEY” saw him slowly drink himself away. Albeit the girl hid her depression, I wonder, if those people had CARED to reach out and helped them with their depression, Will this song be created?
Forgiveness is hard to give if you are deeply wounded. If the guy was able to forgive the girl and give their relationship a second chance, will there be a turn of events?
Good song I might go and download it.
Thank you 😊
Goosebumps! It got right through me. Very sad. 😢
