Hi guys....
It's your girl @Amzzy
Welcome you to Amzzy lecture.
Today we will be discussing another important punctuation mark that is quite complicated but easy to know and understand once you get the rule or let me say once you get the gist, how, when, where to apply it and where you should not apply it....
Let me give U a recap of our last class.
Punctuation marks are signs and symbols that are used in English language sentences to make it more understandable and to remove ambiguity in sentences..
Do you get that? They are marks and symbols that spices up a sentence 😂😂😂😂.
Let's go to the topic of today
Apostrophe. (')
Apostrophe is one of the punctuation marks used in English language. It could be used before an S or after an S.
Example
John's book
Boys' cars.
There are three meanings which an apostrophe conveys when it is added at the end of a word...we will know about this today and then we start focusing on possessive nouns which is a word ending with apostrophe S which is then followed by a noun, adjective etc.
Take a look at this Examples below.
John's tall.
John's studied.
John's car.
In example one it simply means that " John is tall"
John is a noun and tall is an adjective.
When an S is added to a noun ,followed by an adjective" the apostrophe S means is"
In example 2
John's studied. It simply means John has studied.
How do you know that?
John is a noun and studied is a past participle.
So when Apostrophe S is added to a noun followed by a past tense or a present perfect tense, " the apostrophe S stands for has"
In example 3
John's car.
When an apostrophe S is added to a noun followed by a noun "the apostrophe S shows possession .it shows ownership of a particular something.
Do you all understand? 😁😁😁If you don't feel free to ask me any question about this in the comment section and I promise that I would tackle it🥰.
Haven seen what each apostrophe added to a word means; let quickly move on with:
How to use apostrophe S in English
Where do I put the Apostrophe?
When do I put apostrophe S?
And when just to put apostrophe without S.
Possessive nouns and how to use the apostrophe S
Possessive nouns are used to show that something belongs to something or someone.
When you have a singular noun not ending with S add apostrophe ' S.
Examples.
Oxygen's house is very big: this means that the house which belongs to oxygen is very big.
Oxygen is a singular noun;therefore an 'S is added to the name oxygen.
Where is waky's book?
Am going to meet omotola's fiancee today.
Is that your friend's dog?
Plural nouns ending in S needs only an apostrophe (') without S
Example
Where are the dogs' bones?
In the above sentences the plural noun is dogs meaning that that are more than one hence an apostrophe is added after the S in dogs.
It is wrong to say
Where are the dogs's bones..
More examples.
This is my friends' house: this simply mean that two of your friends owns the house.
Friends is a plural noun do we just add an apostrophe (') to the s.
It is wrong to say
This is my friends's house.🤣🤣
To avoid boring my student with a lot of teaching; let us take a break and then come back to finish with the other rules " when, where and when not to add an apostrophe S.
