El sargento Garcia / Sergeant Garcia

Hola amigos / Hello friends
Hello everyone and happy day. I want to start this publication with a brief reflection. Thanks to this platform I have been able to develop one of my passions such as drawing. For many years this passion for drawing and art remained in the background. My profession is tsu in electricity a profession that I have worked all my working life, I am currently 48 years old. I have no formal education in drawing, but I do not consider myself self-taught because there is a phrase that says that "where there is a teacher, there is a school" and I have had many teachers, because I have always liked to read and now with the internet you have at hand many resources for learning. Throughout my life I have always set goals, which are my small personal victories that keep me in constant learning and I think it will be like that until the end. And now my goal is to learn as much as I can about drawing and it will be my purpose from now on.
Well and having said that I have proposed to make a daily sketch explaining the techniques used step by step for its realization later in another publication I would like to show the finished work, this with the intention to improve and show the complete process and to start this goal I share my sketch number 1 which is about Sergeant Garcia of the series El Zorro of 1957, this character was played by the actor Henry Calvin (1918-1975), who besides actor was a singer and he was the one who interpreted the theme of Zorro with which the series began.
Here I show you the drawing process:
For this sketch I will use the grid method, which is a method that allows us to reproduce a model with identical proportions reduced or increased from the original. To do this, the image of the model is divided into a series of squares of identical dimensions and the surface on which we want to make the reproduction in the same number of regular squares that may be smaller or larger depending on the proposed purpose. In general, large mural paintings, as well as paintings of large dimensions are drawn by this procedure, gridding small sketches that allow the artist to better realize the effect of the whole. Gridding is a long work that must be executed with great accuracy.
This method originates from memorial times. The Egyptians used this technique to build their structures, paint and make reliefs. It is said that they were the ones who created it and were the first to use it.
The great Renaissance artists such as Albrecht Dürer used grid for their works.

Initially the reference image is taken and a grid is made on it, this time I used a 5X5 grid to work with, I think that this amount is enough to locate the elements of the drawing.
Then on the paper I transferred the 5X5 grid, defining the size I wanted for the drawing. In my case my drawing will be 20 X 17.5 cm, so the squares will be 4 X 3.5 cm.
Then transfer the image to my grid. At this point we must observe the model very well to locate the elements in each square, this will allow us to place them correctly.
Later I erased my paintings and began to detail my drawing a little, trying to give more rhythm to the initial strokes that were straighter.
Finally detail the hair a little bit and outline the shadow areas to have a guide at the moment of shading. Up to this point I consider that the initial sketch is ready. The final work can be done in graphite or pencil, I would have to decide since both media fascinate me. I hope you like the publication and I am open to any suggestion you would like to give me. Thank you until the next drawing.
