Sketchtember 2023 Week 3

Hi everybody,

Welcome back to emanate artworx! It's time for another Sketchtember on Hive visit. This week's prompts are:

☆Sweater
☆Picture
☆Redesign a Character

For week 1, I chose "Redraw a drawing from last year." Since I really like landscapes, I re-made a September 2022 landscape. And for week 3, I'm choosing "picture." Another landscape!

This one has a little roundabout back-story to go with it. See, at the beginning of August, I started making this other landscape painting. It was looking so promising, so amaze. The clouds, the colors, the vibes 🥹.

But something happened a couple of weeks in. I started becoming dissatisfied with this canvas. Every time I would see it on the easel, it would mock me. It had formed a life of its own and really got into my head. So I started "making adjustments" to what I'd already done, a big mistake!

Long story short, I ended up destroying my creation.

Not my best moment. But I'm keeping the sliced up canvas as a lesson and a reminder to focus on my vision and work through the difficulties 'til the end.

The silver lining, and the point of this post, is this new picture that came up from the ashes of the cut-up painting. As soon as I put down the blade, I had a strong urge to create a new scene. Weird!

But I went with it, and this is the end result. A much more satisfying ending. And I finished it right in time for Week 3 of #Sketchtember.

This is watercolor and crayon on mixed media paper. The reference is of an image I saw on mapcrunch.com, taken in Queensland, Australia. I'm not sure exactly how long it took, but it was about 2-1/2 hours altogether, split into multiple sessions.

Reference for the destroyed painting was from unsplash, taken at a national park in Texas.

So, yeah,

Don't give up, even when you recognize your mistakes and things seem hopeless. Life will always have its challenges, how we face them is what's important.

Thank you ArtPark on Hive for this initiative and thanks everyone who has participated! Keep creating and stay the course. See you on the next one. 🖍

I really like your crayons work, always astounds me you can 'squeeze' so much from such a simple tool. How you combined waxed crayons with watercolour? Wasn't that difficult? I would think it would be impossible to add some water-based paint over wax-based crayons, was it?

I nearly always want to destroy my drawings. Sometimes in the middle, and nearly always - when I would see them after a while. I can see all mistakes and imperfections. It drives me mad!

That's so sweet of you to say. No, I wouldn't call it difficult. I worked in layers, going from wax to watercolor, back and forth, building it up until it was saturated enough. The opposite nature of the materials actually made it a fun exercise.

That's the double-edged sword of creating art. A love-hate relationship sometimes. But as long as you don't let the disdain take over, you're probably still doing OK : ). It's not the same as creating a child, there's no requirement to love them all equally 😈 and it's OK to slash or burn your art if you feel like it's necessary!

Gotta try that. Have you ever used masking fluid? Was thinking about it the other day. I am making plenty of mistakes, and sometimes even graphite is nearly impossible to get rid of from paper. But with this fluid one can keep some parts 'protected from abuse' ;) in order to have some clean parts of the white paper - I am very tempted. Just have no experience with it at all;/

Agreed! To be fair - hive helped me to be more understanding of my own work. And I have an extra motivation to finish my drawings. Then(when finished) they are much more difficult to destroy, you know:)))

Masking fluid has its perks, like you said, leaving some areas untouched during the rest of the process. In my experience, it can be annoying in some ways because it can tear off the top layer of your paper's surface (😭😭) during removal. Some brands are very smelly and difficult to apply quickly (they start to get gummy and gunky before you get the whole area covered). Also, they have a short shelf life of 6 months to 1 year. But it's fairly inexpensive, so I say go for it if you want to experiment!

You're totally right about finished drawings being more difficult to kill 😌. If it's finished and ugly, just put it in an unused corner somewhere for posterity.

Thank you so so much! I just had a feeing you know your way around this stuff! So so glad I've asked! I will try, but probably not onto my scroll thing, because its pretty thin one.
I have few sheets of cotton rag left - that should do, right?

Sounds nice:)
Or even re-discover them after decade or two:)

You're most welcome! Yes, try it out first on a low investment/low emotional attachment surface. I've used masking fluid on mixed media sketch paper, cheap watercolor paper and on Arches watercolor paper. See what works best for you and your process!

Yeah! It's kind of surreal to come back to old "forgotten" works from your past. 😊 See you around, Strega!

Thank you very much!

LEZZGO!! 🔥

I swear, Ema, I can totally see this in some exhibits. The first one is good too. I like the house so much! 😍Keep painting!

you really do give off thay peaceful vibe in your drawings. it's nice

You're so sweet, Hanz. It's a combination of watercolor and crayon. The peaceful vibe is my comfort zone 😭🥹.

ohh it looked so much like pencil color. i didn't realize the crayon texture that much. this is a lovely piece

Aww, thank you! For as terrible as the acrylic turned out, this one was so pleasant to make.
That saboteur is a real a-hole 😈

That's so cool! I love the colour selection and what you did with it!

I used a limited color palette to keep the harmony in balance. Thank you for your comments! 💖

Naurrrrrr, the first one is so pretty too, sad. The second one is pretty too, this is the kind of scenery I imagined on my dream house.

Ahhh, yes it was a bittersweet thing, to destroy something with potential. But it's still a valuable lesson.

The dreamy quality of the 2nd one was so nice to work with 😊. The trees and flowers make it so soothing. Nice harmony between nature and man-made elements. Thank you 💖
