Here I share the process step by step and at the same time I will be placing fragments of one of his stories called The Raven.

- Who is Edgar Allan Poe?

Edgar Allan Poe He was an American writer, critic, journalist and poet, who was born in Boston, United States, on January 19, 1809, and died on October 7, 1849 in Baltimore, United States. ... In addition, he was a great writer of both science fiction and horror works.

-- Why I choose to draw Edgar Allan Poe?

He is personally my favorite author, followed by H.P Lovecrafts, J. R. R. Tolkien, etc. I am very obsessed with his way of writing, his life, besides that we were both born on January 19.

- What I use?

  • Pencil 5H.
  • A5 220gsm White Card.
  • Stypen INK Pen. .
  • Pelikan INK |Black|.
    -Brush n°4.

-- In the first part, I made a quick sketch and I was polishing and cleaning it until I was satisfied.

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore—
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door—
“ ’Tis some visiter,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door—
Only this and nothing more.”

- For the base outline and to modify some details I chose to start with the roller ink pen and my stypen pen.

Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December;
And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly I wished the morrow;—vainly I had sought to borrow
From my books surcease of sorrow—sorrow for the lost Lenore—
For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore—
Nameless here for evermore.

- Once finished with minimal details and outlined, step to fill using the stypen since the ink is more fluid without spilling or wetting the paper too much.

And the silken, sad, uncertain rustling of each purple curtain
Thrilled me—filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before;
So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating
“ ’Tis some visiter entreating entrance at my chamber door—
Some late visiter entreating entrance at my chamber door;—
This it is and nothing more.”

- I Move on to the less time consuming details, neck and mustaches. While working on this piece I enjoyed listening to the audiobook that inspired me to make this portrait. The Raven. I'll be leaving the link at the end of the post.

Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,
”Sir,” said I, “or Madam, truly your forgiveness I implore;
But the fact is I was napping, and so gently you came rapping,
And so faintly you came tapping, tapping at my chamber door,
That I scarce was sure I heard you”—here I opened wide the door;—
Darkness there and nothing more.

- Although it is not the most difficult for me, it will always be the part that requires the most delicacy, the one that takes the most calm and concentration, working with the liquid ink, I reduced it by 5% in water and began to work it on the drawing, with a sheet always under the main sheet (as a precaution, this paper does not allow liquids to pass through, be it ink, watercolor or marker)

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before;
But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token,
And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, “Lenore?”
This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, “Lenore!”
Merely this and nothing more.

7.png

- This for me was the most difficult part, however I take each of my drawings as one more practice, none has been a definitive drawing since I have never stopped learning from my mistakes and the other factors that a drawing entails. In this part, work with the pen on the details of the shadows, which in most ink drawings are expressed through parallel lines.

Back into the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning,
Soon again I heard a tapping something louder than before.
“Surely,” said I, “surely that is something at my window lattice;
Let me see, then, what thereat is, and this mystery explore—
Let my heart be still a moment and this mystery explore;—
’Tis the wind and nothing more!”

8.png

- After working on the shadows and details until I was satisfied with my drawing, I finished scribbling it, editing it and finishing it, then a friend reminded me of two other drawings that I had done a few years ago and said "wow how much have you improved "That made me want to practice more and in a year I will make another drawing of this man, one more for my collection, here below I will share the images of the other two.

Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter,
In there stepped a stately Raven of the saintly days of yore;
Not the least obeisance made he; not a minute stopped or stayed he;
But, with mien of lord or lady, perched above my chamber door—
Perched upon a bust of Pallas just above my chamber door—
Perched, and sat, and nothing more.

- My 2016 drawing, a fairly basic portrait, stencil style, by that time I had begun to experiment directly with ink, both liquid and roller pen and the use of nibs. It is not very elaborate but I still love it.

Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,
By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore,
“Though thy crest be shorn and shaven, thou,” I said, “art sure no craven,
Ghastly grim and ancient Raven wandering from the Nightly shore—
Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night’s Plutonian shore!”
Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.”

-My 2013 Drawing, This cartoon version refers to his version that appeared in the famous television series "SouthPark." He appeared as a ghost in the Season Seventeenth episode, "Goth Boys 3: Dawn of the Fakes", there was also a reference to him in Season Seven in the episode "Raisins" where Stan was wearing a T-shirt from his face when went gothic for a while. Poe appeared under the name "Night Pain"

- In this drawing use only sharpie markers.

Much I marvelled this ungainly fowl to hear discourse so plainly,
Though its answer little meaning—little relevancy bore;
For we cannot help agreeing that no living human being
Ever yet was blessed with seeing bird above his chamber door—
Bird or beast upon the sculptured bust above his chamber door,
With such name as “Nevermore.”

- There is not much to compare as they are slightly different techniques and drawings, however through those years I improved and practiced too much.

But the Raven, sitting lonely on the placid bust, spoke only
That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour.
Nothing farther then he uttered—not a feather then he fluttered—
Till I scarcely more than muttered “Other friends have flown before—
On the morrow he will leave me, as my Hopes have flown before.”
Then the bird said “Nevermore.”

Startled at the stillness broken by reply so aptly spoken,
“Doubtless,” said I, “what it utters is its only stock and store
Caught from some unhappy master whom unmerciful Disaster
Followed fast and followed faster till his songs one burden bore—
Till the dirges of his Hope that melancholy burden bore
Of ‘Never—nevermore.’ ”
