Daily Painting #20 — Another Sky Study!

Ok lock and load — here we have Daily Painting #20!
Yet again, for anyone new: I’m doing a daily painting challenge
(one quick 1-hour study) every. single. day. this month.

Partly to get more brush-time…
Partly to get back into the rhythm of daily blogging…
And partly because apparently I like to torture myself with streaks that I inevitably break on the last day (hello Apple watch exercise rings 😭).

But here we are — two-thirds through — and still going strong!

🎨 Colours

Same palette as yesterday — I used the leftover paint from the previous sky study:

  • Blues: Mostly Cobalt Blue (it blends better down into the yellows),
with some Ultramarine for the deeper areas.
  • Reds: Cad Red Light, Quin Magenta, Napthol Crimson
  • Yellows: Cad Yellow Medium & Light
  • Earths: Raw Sienna, Raw Umber, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber
  • Purples: Dioxazine
  • Greens: Phthalo Green, Chromium Green
  • White
  • And GUESS WHAT — I actually used Black today!
Sometimes it just mixes too beautifully with yellow for dark greens.

🎨 Method

1. Underpainting

Just a Burnt Sienna wash — same as yesterday.

2. Sky

  • Base mix: Cobalt Blue + White + a touch of Burnt Sienna
(keeps it from going candy blue)
  • Very top: a smidge of Dioxazine Purple
  • Worked from top down, then switched and blended upward from the horizon
with yellows — being VERY careful not to create the dreaded green line
    where blue meets yellow.
(I’ve ruined a few skies that way 😂)

3. Sunset Colours

  • Yellows and oranges were slightly muted with complementary colours:
a touch of purple, or Raw Sienna, to keep them from glowing neon.

4. Foreground

Honestly?
I just threw in “a foreground” because the sky was the subject today. Can you tell? lol!

My brushes are NOT cooperating with bushes at the moment.
Yes yes, “a bad tradesman blames his tools”… but these brushes are old and tired.
I need to dig out my full set — currently painting on top of sewing boxes
because my desk still isn’t set up in this room.

Still… the light in this room is SO much nicer.

I need to get properly set up... but then i loose painting time and THAT is not ideal either... so we will see.. lets get the challenge over and we will see where we are then.

The Day That Was

We had school carols night tonight.
They craned in a huge stage — genuinely impressive.
Only one bug bite all evening, of course it was the 6-year-old.
She will complain about that for DAYS.
At least it was a mozzie and not a green ant —
and any Australian will know those tiny terrors pack a WILD punch.

Tomorrow:

  • Ballet choreography competition
  • Singing showcase
  • Rhinestoning costumes
  • Running around like chaos incarnate

Like I said yesterday, I think Sunday’s painting might be done in the back of the theatre.
That could get… interesting. 😂
last time i tried that i had a little group of tiny dancers sitting around my feet watching me paint for hours with me saying every 1 minute "DO NOT PUT YOUR FINGERS IN THE CAD YELLOW PAINT!!!!!"

Anyway — I’m off.
Need to relax and watch some TV before bed.
Wish I could have a beer… but today is a no alcohol day. Sigh.
