A customer called in to let us know that their yard light was no longer working. Honestly, these streetlights and yard lights are really annoying. We used to try to repair the old mercury vapor or high pressure sodium lights and their photocells. Packing around all the different bulbs and various wattages in the bin of our trucks. Once the company started getting LED lights in, I just started swapping them out. Quick easy fix. Then the company caught on and realized how dumb it was to stock all the different bulbs and photocells in the warehouse and instructed us to just swap them out to LEDS… I’m way ahead of you guys on that move ;)
This light I had to change was at the dang cemetery. There is a house in the back where the Caretaker/Sexton lives. Ummm no thanks I will pass on that. I didn’t even know we provided power to this cemetery…
I climbed the pole, check for bad connections, then removed the light. I ran around catching a few other service orders on the way into the shop to get a new LED light.
As I was tooling up to climb this pole, I heard a noise in the line of pine trees that separates the cemetery from an open grassy field. “WTH IS THAT?!?”
This cemetery is right off the main drag that separates Walla Walla and College Place. What’s this fella doing here in the middle of town? I swear I see deer in the most random places around here. I love it!
His little antlers are growing in nicely. This little guy was probably about 30ft from me. Then I noticed he wasn’t alone, he had a little buddy with him.
Me being me, I walked up to them to see how close I could get without them feeling skittish. At about 15ft they both started looking for an escape route.
So I backed off and just watched for a minute while they did their thing. Speaking of things to do, I had to install this light and get going. There was some voltage issues down at a river pump station on the Snake River just below Lower Monumental Dam. It’s about a 45 minute drive from here.
I love the amount of wildlife I encounter around here. Deer, Turkeys, Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles, Fox, Badgers, Porcupines, Elk, and occasion Bear off in the distance. We also have Cougars, which I am happy to not have encountered during a night outage up in the mountains. A couple guys encountered one a month or so ago… Ya, No thanks!! The fun part about it is, we have no way of protecting ourselves. Firearms of any kind are not allowed… so I guess they expect us to beat them off with our flashlights. LOL
I will leave you with this… The Snake River and The Lower Monumental Dam doing what it does best… produce electricity!!
