I can imagine that being a very real reaction that many people would have: to start looking for other people, and maybe do this until the day they die, never actually believing they're the last person in the world.

There were two sides of my comment. There is the wandering around seeking companionship. The second reason is trying to figure out what just happened.
If you woke up and found everyone gone: Would you assume that all the people somehow disappeared leaving just you, or would you assume that you somehow disappeared and that all of the people were somehow somewhere else?
