Advice To City Council
A famous movie star was once elected mayor of a small seaside town.
At his first city council meeting he addressed the members.
It's been reported he said something to the effect,
“Let's take our work seriously, but let's not take ourselves seriously.”
Apparently the council members weren't sure what he meant.
But I've got a hunch.
The Hindus have a belief that we are split when we are born.
The small atomic soul is living this life on Earth.
While the other part of us, the larger super soul, watches over.
This eternal being has observed many of our lives.
It has wisdom, humor, and tremendous insight.
People who meditate can come into contact with this part of themselves.
It can be a revelation. Whatever message is imparted.
Such a message came to me once, as a gentle jab.
It reminded me I was taking myself too seriously.
The voice asked me who I was and what I was up to.
At first I was frightened by this voice speaking at the top of my head.
Then I realized I had heard it before. It was familiar. An old friend whom
I'd not heard in a long, long time.
In fact not in this lifetime—BOOM!
Now I was getting it.
I had lived before. I will live again. My soul is eternal. You never die.
A huge weight was lifted from my shoulders.
Currently, I was just playing a role on life's stage.
It would come to a close one day and the curtain would go down.
BUT—I was acting this role:...way...too...seriously.
I was depressed about a love affair that didn't work out.
It was the end of the world—NOT!
Wake up. Take life seriously, but not TOO seriously.
Life's a game. We all play our part. But there must be balance.
Between trying and letting go.
Between caring and not caring.
If it's not in the cards then don't force it.
You may not get what you think you want.
You may find out later it's a good thing you didn't.
Because there's another, better way to go.
Life's a wave rolling towards shore.
Sometimes we're in perfect timing with the wave. Sometimes not.
Pay attention. But let the moment happen as naturally as you can.
Retain your sense of humor. Don't rush if it feels wrong.
Try your best, but allow for less than you desire and only for what you need.
And above all—remember Mr. Eastwood's sagely advice to city council.
