The theatrics within the McMahon family are endless. I have been following wrestling for years, and man, does this Netflix doc about Vince McMahon dish up some major tea.
That knife moment between Vince and Shane – holy smokes!
Imagine your dad handing you a knife and being all, "Stick it in my heart if you want control so bad." That is some next-level psychological warfare right there. I don't know; I've had tiffs with my old man, but nothing that ever ended up with the prospect of potential patricide on the table.
And Vince's childhood?
Talk about a rough start. Physically abused by a step-dad, not meeting his real father till he was 12 years old? No wonder the guy's got issues. This cat's been fighting his whole life, in and out of the ring.
But what really clinches it is the approval-seeking cycle:
Vince tries for his dad's respect for years, finally gets it in the form of "I love you" at the old guy's deathbed, then turns around and does the same thing to Shane – it's like watching history repeat itself in a more muscular, shirtless version.
I gotta give it to Shane; that can't be easy, just walking away from the family business. WWE was his whole life, and he gave it up all because he couldn't see eye-to-eye with his old man. That takes guts. I mean, I can barely walk away from a bad Netflix series, let alone a multi-million dollar company.
Classic Vince:
My way or the highway, even if it means alienating those who are supposed to be closest to him. I've seen less obstinate mules. Still, one does suppose this is the sort of attitude that will get someone to build something like WWE.
Now, there's even a rumor that Shane might actually sign with AEW – which, I mean, could you imagine? That would be like Luke Skywalker joining the Empire. Okay, maybe not quite that serious, but you catch my drift.
It's seriously going to stir the waters in the world of wrestling.
It's all about respect, really.
Shane's still out there, basically trying to prove something to dear old dad. It's kinda sad, really, after all these years, you'd think Vince would give the guy a break.
But nope, it's all about the control factor.
This whole saga just goes to show that even when you're at the top of the wrestling world, family drama can still body-slam you. Of course, the McMahons have the money, the power, the influence – but boy, they have the same problems you and I have, it's just that the stakes and audience are greater.
