When it comes to poetry, I’ve always found it fascinating. It’s not just words on a page, but a way of expressing emotions and experiences that are often hard to describe. It can make something ordinary to be extraordinary by pointing out the beauty within the banalities and exposing the complexities of life.

What I love most about this form is how deeply personal it is for every individual who reads or listens to it. For me, poems sometimes speak in ways no other writing can. It sort of feels as if the poet reached into my mind and expressed his/her thoughts with my voice. However, such interaction does not only happen between readers and poets only, in fact, poetry also serves as a link to our common humanity showing that what we feel; joyfulness, sadness as well hope fears are ordinary to everyone else.
Some philosophers were suspicious of the craft since it could divert people from rational deliberations. Conversely, Aristotle considered poetry to be ‘a catharsis’ that assists in the release and management of emotions. To me, poetry is a little bit of both. It provokes my thought process and helps me understand my feelings better. It is a fine line between emotion and logic; it is like a duet between reason and passion.
Poetry often has no apparent meaning and leaves room for different interpretations. Hence, one person can grasp numerous meanings from one poem depending on his/her own experiences or perspectives. This is why poetry is so powerful—it speaks to everyone differently. Whenever I read a poem, it feels as if I am peeling away layers of meaning to get new revelations every time. It resembles an exploration mission into oneself where each reading makes us discover something new again and again.
Over the years, there have been various poets who have inspired me. Shakespeare’s beautiful sonnets which discuss love and betrayal; Homer’s stories of heroism and adventure; Emily Dickinson’s introspective verses stay with me. Also, I adore Rumi for his poetry which possesses a profound spiritual sense, and Langston Hughes who powerfully portrayed African American experience. The raw and confessional style of Sylvia Plath has also struck me as something powerful, demonstrating the capability of poetry to delve into the most personal and painful aspects of life.

Poetry is continuing to change today while new forms emerge too. Spoken word poetry is a popular genre these days giving it more life and making it readily available even to those who thought they couldn’t relate before. Such performances bring in voice quality and topnotch delivery also. Moreover, social media platforms like Twitter(X) have helped revive poetry since poets can use them to reach out globally online in real-time platforms. There is a lively community of poets and lovers of this art form in this digital age.
I have always derived solace and inspiration from poetry. Poetry helps me to process my feelings during hard times. The poems are timely reminders that we are not unique in our predicaments; they show us that others before us have gone through such experiences and they were able to voice them beautifully. Moreover, poetry can be a weapon for activism and change, enabling the marginalized to speak out while forcing society to view itself from another angle.

As long as there is human experience to delve into, and emotions to express, poetry will continue to be an indispensable part of our lives.

I completely get what you mean about poetry being personal. It's incredible how the same poem can mean something totally different to each person. Your description of poetry as a mix of reason and passion is spot on. Poetry really does blend emotions and logic in a way nothing else can
