Catholic Hospital's Abortion Refusal.

in Cent3 months ago

I am utterly appalled at the recent lawsuit filed against Providence St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka. It is just so absurd that in California, a state known for progressive reproductive rights, we have a situation in our hands mirroring some of the country's strictest abortion laws in conservative states.

The case of Anna Nusslock is heart-wrenching

15 weeks pregnant, carrying twins, her water breaks, and she is informed that the pregnancy is not viable, yet she is dismissed with a bucket of towels from the hospital for bleeding.

This is appalling, medically negligent and Inhumane.

This particular incident hits close to home, as some years ago, my cousin was in a similar situation, going through the ordeal, in another state. The emotional trauma she endured coupled with physical risks was devastating. It's infuriating to think that such practices can take place right here in California.

I commend the decision of Attorney General Rob Bonta to sue the hospital as a bold, yet necessary step.

The accountability of healthcare providers for putting outdated policies ahead of patients' health and wellbeing is long overdue . The "detectable heartbeat" policy of the hospital is dangerous for its complete misalignment with medical best practices and state laws.

What's most troubling for me is what kind of precedent this sets:

If a Catholic hospital in California can deny lifesaving treatment based on its religious beliefs, where does that end? Are we regressing in terms of equity in healthcare and women's rights?

Essentially, this is not just a lawsuit; it is a fight for the basic right to healthcare without discrimination. It is of utmost importance that we support such action and demand that all hospitals, irrespective of their religious affiliations, put the health of the patients above everything else.
