Is it possible to compete at Mythic rank as F2P? Can you win vs $500, $1600 decks? Yes, you can!

Hello! I'm Tony and today you going to believe in your capabilities in winning good prises at Mythic rank on Weekend event on a budget or even as a F2P like I am!
First of all here's my deck I was playing the whole Weekend that happened on 14-15-16th of January 2022.

image.png

As you can see on the first screenshot I've hidden my nickname with the only purpose to not let my Weekend opponents know the exact deck I'm playing. Changing nickname is one of the simpliest options into the game client.

At the same time I myself was looking at the opponents' deck via GU decks Player stats page: https://gudecks.com/meta/player-stats.

image.png

The price of my F2P Nature deck

At the time of writing the post ETH price is $3,269.30, est. price of my deck is 0.0433 ETH, so my deck price is $141.56. I've been grinding as a F2P for 11 weeks. I have some spare 0.0043 ETH in my Immutable wallet (acquired via trading GU cards from rewards: DO and fused Core cards). I still have unspent 83.3454 $GODS tokens in believe that some time in future (hopefully, this year) it might cost much more than today. But that's just my IMHO, nobody knows
for sure, so always do your OWN research.

Is it possible to win against $1600 deck?

So across my Weekend matches I faced this deck at Mythic rank:

image.png

image.png

Overall this player made it to 17 wins at Mythic rank on Weekend with this particular deck.
Est. price of the opponent's deck is 0.5148 ETH = $1680.78.
The most expensive cards are: Pyramid Warden, Scythes of the Harvest, Oddi Valka’s Herald, Master Tactician, Out of Its Misery.

Winning against such decks is not an easy task to accomplish I must say. But I had a plan in my head and some counter-meta cards in my deck.
Usefull notes and tips:

  • When facing Aggro War decks it's almost always better to pick the Selena's Mark Godpower (it'll help sustain your HP and deal with Protected)
  • In current meta I like very very much to have 2 Munosian Infiltrators (such a big value for such low cost!). It makes too easy to deal with cards like: Pyramid Warden, Skeleton Heavy, Marsh Walker, Warmonger Smith, etc... It even kills 0 power creatures and structures (sometimes causing game bugs but mostly making valuable trades possible)
  • Low-Hanging Fruit, Faeflame Blade and Selena's mark Godpower help with contesting the board control in early game
  • Celestial Stag is undervalued card IMHO, if you can make it generate at least 1 card it could make you the entire game. Also it has Blessing allowing early control of Favor, I love this card! Maybe make it have 4 HP? Nah, I guess it would be too much, haha! 😅
  • Falling Star is a conditional spell serving role of being a "slow" removal and buff with the board presence. IMHO, since it's buff I see a rise of this card being used more and more every week

So, the plan was to not lose board control in early-to-mid game and bomb the opponent with my big
beefy creatures like: Giant Pangolin and Charging Oryx. It all went as I planned, it was not easy, but I got the win!

Are we afraid of $400 deck after winning vs $1600?

My next opponent was playing this Nature deck:

image.png

image.png

Overall this player made it only to 11 wins rewards (IDK exactly how much wins he got, obviously somewhere between 11 and 13) at Mythic with deck similar to what he played against me.
Est. price of the opponent's deck is 0.1399 ETH = $456.34.
The most expensive cards are: Underbrush Boar, Finnian Fruitbearer, Iron-tooth Goblin.

image.png

Game plan for my deck is pretty much the same as in previous game and it kinda applies to almost all the Aggro matchups.
So I secured a win and continued my Weekend journey. It all went better than at the week before when I got only 15 wins and took 14 wins reward.
Of course, there were some loses to expensive meta decks like Board wipe death, Hidden Rush Deception, Control War, Frenzied Aggro War, etc...

image.png

But the point of this post is to make YOU confident in youself and your deck. I am in no mean a pro player, I'm just a regular guy who likes to play games and make content on the internet. If I can make it to 17 wins at Mythic rank as a F2P, I trully believe YOU can do it too with the little faith in yourself and the luck in card pulls!

Thank you for your time.

Great job, it's always encouraging to see good performance with inexpensive decks 😄

Stay tuned, I'm going to post more budget and F2P friendly decks every week!

Nice write up. Just curious if you find yourself in a lot of situations where you get to use wildfire? And jaguar staff? I am also a nature player. I am currently running 2x wild root staff. I have the jaguar staff but was iffy about how it performs in the current meta. The staff I use gives me a heal at the end. While jag staff gives you a body on the board. I just opened my packs from last week and got my second FaeFlame Blade so those will be going in next week. And no issues with relic removal when you face war? Or are you counting on the sanctum for that.

Yeah, sometimes using Wildfire on a wide board on my side just makes the opponent to concede, sometimes it helps to clear hidden creatures.
Jaguar Staff always gives value when I play it. In current meta Control decks dominate at Mythic on high elo, so there's less space for the Staff to shine. On the other hand Aggro decks are very common at Mythic on low elo, so there're a lot of opportunities to get value from the Staff.
But with only 1 copy of each of those 2 cards their draw is not consistent. Maybe I should swap those for another pair of cards.

I love Faeflame Blade as it is atm (there're possible rework changes of the Core set and Faeflame blade had it's stats and cost changed for PTR). Right now I consider it as 2 Vanguard Axewoman with a HP cost. HP is a resource, right? Just don't run out of it! 😄

I looked at a lot of budget Nature decks that got 20-23 wins at Mythic on Weekend and almost none have relic removal cards. So I decided to try the same concept this week. Yeah, i'm relying on Sanctum and Blessing from Celestial stag but it feels kinda slow and my opponent often already gets value from Enduring shield or Barbed Hook

Consider following me, I'll keep posting with my deck changes and it's performance on Weekend

Thanks for getting back to me. I love nature so when anyone does a good post about it I want to know how things are working for them. And I will certainly follow you.

Sure! I'm trying to improve my deck little by little as F2P with no immediate access to Underbrush Boars (0.0550 ETH), Selena Champion of Nature (0.0600 ETH) and Chiron the Teacher (0.0589 ETH). I'm a bit concerned about when I get to these point the price of those cards boing to be still out of my range 😅

I got Selena at around $30 months ago and Chiron for around the same price. Those were my best buy and that is for certain. I feel your pain about the Underbrush Boars. And really want gold cause of the whole shine play to earn coming.

Yeah. I wish I had started playing and gathering cards way way earlier. Well, at least I staarted with the Blessing of the Gods event. Some people who got the retrospective airdrop say that the game is over for them, they got the profits. I'm very bullish on GU, IMHO this game has such a great potential and bright future. So starting today while there're not that much of a playerbase comparing to Hearthstone and MTG feels like I hop onto the accelerating intercontinental train that could exceed supersonic speed or even FTL speed, you know? 😃

We are super early. So yes I firmly believe this game has a huge upside to it. And so does the community on Hive. If we grow both communities think of the earnings potential for everyone. Mobile will lead to explosive growth so us being here now is pretty dang good. And the game will only get more and more polished as we go. Also when the daily $GODS earnings go into effect the earnings will be even higher. Staking will also add another level on top of everything else. Thank you for leaving a meaningful comment as well. This is the kind of engagement we are striving for in the community.

Loving the boom of posts lately on Hive! This is encouraging, my first week in mythic was barely with a positive win-rate. Two questions: What would you replace Finnian with, and secondly, why the Orynxes? These are often not included in decks that are a bit more expensive than 10-15$, but I see that you obviously have access to the other cards which they would replace them with.

What would you replace Finnian with

As a budget replacement I would consider Skeleton Heavy, Rabid Bear, Vanguard Axewoman

Why the Orynxes?

My thinking behind this is that if game last to 7-8 mana and comes to a state where both me and my opponent rely on topdecking I often might lose cuz of bad draw. With Oryxes that problem is solved, but maybe it's better to replace 'em with smth usuful in early-to-mid game to have better chances of closing game before 7 mana. I'll do some more testings and post about refining my deck for Weekend event

The RNG gods play 40% if the role in my opinion. But the way I see it is how. Let us say if it was a mirror match, it is a 50 50 matchup. However, when it is a very expensive good deck against a f2p one, the odds are 30 70 for the expensive one. This means that you still can win but the odds are more against you. In addition, we have to keep in mind cards drawn, starting hand and all that makes huge difference. So yes you can win I agree but we can't deny that expensive cards gives a slight edge.

Yes, it does! But look at the overall stats of both my opponents' expensive decks: 17 wins and 11 wins. So as mine with F2P deck 17 wins. Card's price is not the one and only deciding factor. Good piloting a Lamborghini is as much important as having it.

Follow my new posts with more budget decks that have 24-22 wins at Mythic on Weekend. I'm planning to make such recap of budget decks every week.
