Greetings and welcome to the third part of my matchup series, where I go through all different matchups that I have the necessary card to experience, and explain these matchups in details while narrating how I pilot the game as well!
The goal of this serie is to help all new or unexperienced player get to know a certain matchup for a deck in details, to get more familiar with how they should play the match and how to win this certain matchup more than usual and overall get better at the game!
For this post we have the Card draw magic vs control nature matchup , where I will be playing my card draw magic deck vs a control nature deck! Not a lot of people plays control nature in the current meta, but I was surprised to get matched up against it many times! New decks are emerging and becoming playable! So let's jump into it:
What is control nature about?
To kick things off, let us first talk about how is the control nature deck played most of the time and the purpose of it.
Every control deck in this game have different ways of surviving early and mid game to get to late game. Control nature relies on some removal cards as well as VERY heavy healing to survive to late game. It has many strong spells to remove big creatures as well as small ones, and also so much healing to go with it.
For the early game clearance, control nature mostly uses these cards:
For mid game heavy wide board clear these are the most used spells in these type of decks:
And for control nature specialty; the heavy healing, these are the cards used to heal:
As you can see it is kind of a very heavy healing, which is very annoying for card draw magic because it will outheal the damage you will do later on!
As for late game, control nature has many new ways of playing it whether it using late game creatures or some special creatures for late game like Curious Wisp but that does not matter much because if late game was reached it is almost impossible to win at this point with card draw! So let us see how we should play the matchup
How to play against Control nature with CDM
Now to be honest, this matchup is really annoying for card draw because of the heavy healing the opponent have. Card draw magic is all about setting up a good hand and tempo, and then make it rain down on your opponent with spells and face damage. With control nature, the opponent can outheal you most of the time. Let us do some basic math first to see how much direct face damage we have on average:
These are all the direct damage cards used mostly in card draw magic, let us calculate the damage from all of them, keep in mind we have 2 of each in the deck:
2 _2+1 _2+5 _2+4 _2+4 _2+5 _2= 42 total damage if we used 2 Pyrrhic knowledge and got Wyrmbreath.
You can add to that some extra chip damage or extra from spell boost let us say it comes up to a total of 50.
This damage is divided through the whole game so it will take really long time to do it.
If the opponent was able to use only 1 Winter's Bounty and 1 Compost Charm that is an extra 30 HP which makes your opponent have almost 60 HP from healing. And that what makes this matchup so difficult. So here is how you should try and play it:
- First of all as usual you have to try and setup a good starting hand and tempo.
- Second of all, you have to try and pressure as much as you can with creatures on board in the first 3 to 4 rounds to get as much extra chip damage as you can and lower down your opponent.
- Third of all you have to keep pressuring and bursting as fast as you can, hoping your opponent does not get all his heals before you are able to kill him. If he got off 1 heal it would still be possible to take him down if you have tempo!
This would be a decent starting hand. Early Leyhoard Hatchlings are excellent since they can apply good pressure too!
Gameplay
Here in this gameplay it should be better to underatand everything I talked about before!
Conclusion
This matchup is not easy at all overall, it relies so much on your opponent not having a good luck and getting his heals early on, especially since card draw is not the type of deck to finish off the game from the early 5 to 6 rounds. It is not a very aggro deck and that is what makes it so difficult here!
But of course keep in mind that it is always winnable, and always try your best to apply pressure and play the matchup correctly and let us hope for the best!
That was it for this one, I hope it was beneficial in any way and I hope that you like it. Be sure to give me a follow I would really appreciate it goodluck everyone and I will see you on the next one!
Mad Love, Peace out <3
Nice write up and nice win!
Thank you brother!
It is always nice to see CDM got beaten. As for me, I can always outlast a CDM using my Control Nature deck with Vasek Isle. The problem is that it is weak against other gods.
