Gods Unchained Remixed | 001 - Star Wars Vol. 1

in Gods On Chain3 years ago

Hello, fellow mortals!

My name is Nick, also known as 'CryptoMags' in GU, Twitch, and Discord.

I've been playing GU seriously now for only a handful of months, and it's definitely had it's ups and downs. Even when I'm not particularly interested in playing, like right now, I still enjoy learning about the game, watching the more seasoned players, and interacting with the cards by collecting, and turning them into memes.

The reason I ever got involved with Gods Unchained in the first place, is because I grew up collecting trading cards beginning in grade school, and apparently that has never stopped, because here I am 4 cards away from owning a complete Divine Order play set.

What may surprise some people though, is that I actually have never played Magic: The Gathering. I wasn't allowed to, because my mom didn't like it. What I did play was lots of Star Wars CCG and Pokemon TCG, and I still have almost all of my cards from both of those games.

So, as I enjoy the world of Gods Unchained in the present, I look back at these other games with great fondness too. Since I have been enjoying making meme cards on gucustom.cards, I figured why not merge some cards and characters that I enjoyed as a kid with Gods Unchained?

Think of it as a love letter to the past and present of card games.

Without further ado:

My goal for this was less about being silly, although sometimes unavoidable, and more about trying to actually come up with legitimate Star Wars versions of either existing GU cards, or new cards that would fit into how GU is actually played. So even though the original Star Wars CCG had many more card types than GU (characters, creatures, locations, vehicles, weapons, devices, etc) I am still trying to stay true to the GU format. Also, if you're unfamiliar with the Star Wars game, you simply had one player playing as the light side, and the other playing as the dark side, and every card in the game was either a light side card, or dark side card. This was most obvious by looking at the card backs.

All of that to say, Star Wars had basically two domains instead of 6 like GU. I didn't worry about doing one for each domain or anything like that at this particular point, I just assigned each character to which domain I felt made sense.

Cards

Card: Hooded Figure

Inspired by Hooded Figure (GU), and Garindan (Star Wars)

2.png

This card is taken directly from GU in terms of name and text, although I weakened the stats because there is nothing about Garindan's role in A New Hope that screams 5 mana and 6 damage.

Garindan is a spy, so he fits in well with the Deception domain, with the same text as the Hooded Figure of GU.

Card: Tusken Raider

Inspired by Mountain Raider (GU), and Tusken Raider (Star Wars)

3.png

I got the idea for the Tusken Raider not only because it shares a similar name to Mountain Raider, but because Mountain Raider is a poorly statted creature (for 4 mana) who summons a copy of itself when played, and I think that fits well with Tusken Raiders. The "sand people" are nomads who travel in large groups. On their own they're basically a henchman-level threat, but don't forget what old Ben Kenobi once said...

"I think we better get indoors. The Sand People are easily startled but they will soon be back, and in greater numbers." -- Obi-Wan Kenobi

Card: Jawa

Inspired by Iron-Tooth Goblin (GU), and Jawa (Star Wars)

4.png

The inspiration for the Jawa was the Iron-Tooth Goblin, because the Goblin is only good for removing the opponent's relic. Aside from that it is a poorly statted creature who is easily removed from the board.

We know that Jawas are scavengers who like to collect things like droids, weapons, and materials. I like them as a reliable relic removal. I also opted to take their strength down by one and give them hidden, since they are a bunch of sneaks. Any creature who specializes in both taking an enemy weapon and hiding belongs in the Deception domain. Case closed.

Card: Sandtrooper

Inspired by Mountain Raider (?) (GU), and Sandtrooper (Star Wars)

5.png

There wasn't really a specific card that made me realize we're going to need to go ahead and crank out a stormtrooper (or in this case, sticking with the A New Hope and Tatooine theme, we're going with Sandtroopers for now), but low statted, cheap creatures are a no-brainer, and Sandtroopers are exactly that.

These guys are bad at everything, except showing up in seemingly infinite numbers, hence we are back to a card that can copy itself if the Rebel scum are posing a threat, and reinforcements are needed. Maybe there is another comparable GU card besides a Mountain Raider (again), but that one was already in my head from two cards ago. Oddly enough, I don't even own any Mountain Raiders, and I never see them get any play.

...UNTIL NOW!

New meta confirmed!

Card: Tamed Bantha

Inspired by Tamed Mammoth (GU), and Bantha (Star Wars)

6.png

This is identical to the Tamed Mammoth of GU. No change in the stats or text. I think the similarities are fairly obvious, no? The Mammoth and Bantha have been tamed by the Vikings and Tuskens, respectively.

In the Star Wars game, the Bantha--although a creature--is classified as a vehicle, which we don't have in GU. It fits nicely as a substitute for the Mammoth, though.

Onward!

Card: Han Solo, Smuggler

Inspired by Avatar of Deception (GU), and Han Solo (Star Wars)

7.png

Now, hear me out.

I know you might think it's weird that noted hero of the rebellion, and sole leggy of this volume of Star Wars cards, Han Solo, would be in the Deception camp rather than Light, but keep in mind what he was up to when he was originally introduced to Luke and Obi-Wan at the cantina in Mos Eisley.

That's right!

He was a smuggler of precious cargo, and of course people.

Maybe down the road Han shows up again in his hero form? Hmm...

Either way, I would imagine Han having some nice stats for the mana, have an ability to hide and avoid the enemy, and an ability to give hidden to another friendly character. I don't know... maybe his co-pilot Chewie or a couple of people wanting safe passage to a planet that, unbeknownst to them, was about to be blown up by a giant laser.

Either way, it isn't a direct copy of Avatar, but with similar stats and hidden, as well as one other nice function, it's on par.

Final Thoughts

So, this was a lot of fun for me, and very nostalgic, especially when I went to find the original corresponding Star Wars cards. I haven't tried playing the game in at least 20 years, and I remember the game being FAR more complex than GU, which is something I really appreciate about GU.

The comparative simplicity.

But anyway, I hope you Star Wars/GU fans out there enjoyed looking through these as I did, and I'll try to make some once in awhile when I have time or when I get an idea that I convince myself is actually good.

Until then, which of these did you like the best? Do you think I got any of them wrong? What are some good GU/Star Wars crossover card possibilities?

Until next time. 🤙

Ah, the Starwar CCG, I remember this, never quite got into it. I was more into the Battletech CCG and Werewolf: the Rage myself. These are interesting a takes on adapting them to GU.

Thanks, @verbalshadow!

In hindsight, even though I played the game a little bit, it was way too complicated to take it too seriously. If memory serves, they literally had beginner rules, and then advanced rules. Way more too it than GU, which is something I do like about GU. But as a huge Star Wars kid, I was in it more for the collecting anyway. :)

Jawa is the coolest card, much resemblance with Iron-Tooth and it fits the most the description.

Han Solo is the most useful, I want it for my deck 😀 I would prefer he belongs to Guild tribe 😀

It's cool seeing star wars custom gu cards, seen the same thing in mtg.

I enjoyed making these if for no other reason than for the walk down memory lane. Very nostalgic for me. Excited to do some more when I have time.
