Battle Pass ideas for Gods Unchained

Introduction

This post aims to layout possible perks to attach to a future Gods Unchained Battle Pass.
It's part of a series of posts that collect ideas for game features that have yet to be implemented and I believe would be very beneficial to the game.

I think this feature would make more sense in tandem with a new progression system that features reward tracks, which is also common in many other games including TCGs. Something else to look forward in GU?


What is a Battle Pass, generically?

A Battle Pass (BP) is a seasonal or periodic subscription that typically enhances the in-game progression and provides extra benefits to the player for its duration. It can offer flat benefits from the start , but also offer a tiered reward structure where progress comes from playing the game and completing specific challenges or objectives. The rewards are often weaved into an existing reward or progression track, adding to the rewards already available to the other players.


Examples in other TCGs


Boost to in-game currencies

  • Enhanced gain of Flux, Star Points, Experience or any other non-crypto currency. Could be a percentage gain or a flat amount added on top of the regular rewards already in place

  • Extra currency when completing certain milestones or objectives while the Pass is active


Extra objectives

  • If the game ever includes daily objectives, BP holders could have extra objectives available with corresponding rewards

  • Daily objective re-rolls

  • If the game ever includes reward tracks, BP holders would have extra rewards along the tracks


Star Store

  • Option to select a specific card to be available in the Star Store once per BP season

  • Extra card available in the store. Could be of higher quality or simply another roll of a Meteorite Welcome card

  • Discount in Star Points prices


Packs

  • Extra Core packs when leveling up, or a small chance of getting a special Core pack, or a Legendary pack instead of a normal one

  • Extra packs from Weekend Ranked events

  • Complementary packs from the current expansion set

  • Better chances at rarer cards when opening packs, especially those bought from the game shop


Exclusive cosmetics

  • Special trim around the PFP. One trim could be permanent and increasingly more elaborate with the number of BP purchased; another type of trim could be displayed only while a BP is active

  • An art variant of an existing card could be included in each BP (new mint)

  • An art variant for an existing emote (could be a NFT or just a new cosmetic available for the duration of the BP)

  • Exclusive emotes

  • Exclusive limited-edition minted trinket

  • Exclusive limited-edition minted board

  • Exclusive limited-edition minted card back

  • Exclusive limited-edition any other future cosmetic

  • Deck sleeves to help identify decks in the Workshop

  • Cosmetic upgrades to cards

  • Non-NFT boards or trinkets available for the duration of the BP


Other valuable perks

  • A reduction in the royalties component in the trading fees. For example, a 1% discount from 5 to 4%. If this is technically difficult, it could be executed as a rebate at the end of the BP season

  • Tournament tickets

  • Premium game mode tickets


Community perks

  • Special role in Discord

  • Submit a question for BP-exclusive AMA events


Battle Pass badges

The player's BP purchase history could go on a future public player profile page. A section would display all the BP that player has purchased as badges, serving as a flex along with any other player stats. For this purpose it would be great if each BP would have it's own unique art. It would also be great if each BP badge would be linked to the benefits and rewards the player was able to obtain with it (ie, individual BP historical statistics).

As for more permanent perks, each BP could give the player a small, cumulative bonus to

  • a luck factor that would be applied to future reward rolls. It would be great to show when the luck factor actually improves the outcome, as a benefit reinforcement mechanism to the player

  • experience gain. Could be a fixed amount and needs to be very small so it won't overly benefit a player with a long list of BP purchases

  • and additionally a tiered cosmetic that gets increasingly more elaborate at certain thresholds of accumulated BPs

The BPs could also be minted as NFTs. This means they would be tradable, although in this case I don't align with the consequences - for example they would no longer be proof of the player actually having purchased and benefited from the BP while it was active.

Extra from aside from Daily Play & Earn? If yes, it would be good.

With a reward track, the DP&E could become something completely different and not depend on wins, but like spend 50 mana, deal 200 damage, play 4 Gods, etc... in such a system a BP holder could have extra objectives and thus win more rewards.
