Winner Announcement & Creative Nonfiction Prompt #117

Source

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction prompt!

In this post, we'll announce the winners from last month's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

  • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
  • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
  • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
  • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
  • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
  • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Winner

@popurri wins 20Hive, with the story:

Time to be born

That time came and there were no signs, and I continued in the sweet wait. I was calm, it was the last two weeks of the year, the Christmas holidays and the end of the year, and I was distracted by this, I had the intuition that it was not the time for the baby to be born. I already knew it was a girl, and she would be born the first week of the year.

Curator's comment :

@popurri delights with her CNF piece about the gift of time. The author charms us with her description of instinct, of her maternal sense that she and her baby would know the right time to be born, so they waited together for that moment. When it came, the doctors were not ready, but she was, and so was the baby. The birth was beautiful and unstressed.

Highlighting @rammargarita, with the story:

God is great and powerful

Upon leaving the hospital, Elizabeth raised her arms to heaven, prayed and thanked God for being so great and powerful that he allowed her not to make it to the operating room in time. Six months later, Elizabeth gave birth to a daughter named Makharíanny Abigaíl.

Curator's comment :

Rammargarita writes in a casual voice, as though she is telling a tale to a room full of friends. This is a persuasive and engaging technique.

Highlighting @young-tari, with the story:

Moments to be cherished

At that moment, words failed me; I didn't know what to do, if I was to sit or roll myself on the floor and cry like my sister. I stood there in shock with my legs glued to the ground when suddenly a cold breeze blew my skin, and goosebumps started developing on my skin.

Curator's comment :

@young-tari writes memorably of time spent with her grandmother. She describes the day her grandmother came to live with her, the woman's hand, voice, manner. Her grandmother became @young-tari's protector when the child misbehaved. And this matriarch became the vessel of family lore. Her grandmother came to live with @young-tari's family when the elderly lady was ill. One day that illness took the grandmother's life. The scene in the house is described movingly, when @young-tari discovers her beloved grandmother is gone. This is a story that will stay with the reader.

Featured

Highlighting @joycealarapon, with the story:

The Second Chance

Now, with less than 24 hours to go, I was staring at my notes in fear, barely retaining anything and the pressure was overwhelming. I could slowly feel the weight of failure downing on me.

Curator's comment :

Joycealarapon writes a competent CNF about finding a method to manage her studies. A huge scare gave joycealarapon cause to draw up a study timetable and do away with cram learning. The technique rewarded her with good grades.
