Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #104

Source

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction prompt!

In this post, we'll provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

  • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
  • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
  • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
  • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
  • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
  • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Winner for the month of September

Highlighting @zerah, with the story:

Lay off

Life threw her curveballs, and she had created something beautiful with it. I'm sure In months to come Bukola will be among the best tailors in her area.

Curator's comment :

zerah writes a successful CNF piece in response to the fairies prompt. The author sets a scene from the start the provides conflict. A neighbor is weeping at the door of a factory. There is a general air of disquiet and even sorrow as workers are discharged and find themselves out of a job. The factory manager is presented and explains the reason for the conflict. Throughout the piece @zerah uses dialog well to drive the story home. In the end she offers a satisfying and credible conclusion.

Highlighting @blaqbarbie, with the story:

Whispers In The Air

My sister and I were off to boarding school and would go back home once in a while. There was this time we went back home, and I felt like Jo was different. He was still quiet, gentle as usual, and still a menace at playing pranks. But I noticed something that I was sure I never noticed in him before.

Curator's comment :

The story of @blaqbarbie is very interesting! It shows us the personality of a young man who prefers solitude and who deals with his emotions by making whispers that sound like different voices. The story is written in a way that makes the reader's mind search for alternative explanations to what the writer is suggesting, which indicates a very good handling of the tension. The resolution is also good. Recommended reading.

Highlighting @ridgette, with the story:

Kind Boys Don't Fall From Heaven

Like any other afternoon, most of my girl classmates stayed inside the classroom to gossip or talk about handsome actors and their crushes. The boys on the other hand were playing outside our classroom—playing as if the heat of the blazing sun didn't bother them.

Curator's comment :

What a lovely, sophisticated story. Do we need a happy ending every time? Or is it alright for reality to intrude. This story is first person narrative, and when it is done, we know a lot about that person. The author's attention to detail is exquisite. She gives us the portrait of boy, and in telling us about that boy she tells us about herself. You need to read the rest, because if I reveal it here I will ruin the emotional impact of a very, very well-written story.

This Week's Prompt 104:

Soul food

Traditionally, soul food refers to African American cuisine. However, the term or phrase could mean so much more--comfort food, spiritual food, a relationship that nurtured the soul. You get the idea! So write a story drawn from fact that uses the term "soul food" in an innovative and intriguing manner.

Tell us about it! And remember to integrate storytelling elements like characters, scene setting, dialogue and action to bring your story to life!

Have fun and good luck! We look forward to reading your stories.
