As we read this story, we recognize the profile of an unfeeling person, Joe. The world abounds with these. And yet, as Estelle learns, we cannot shut ourselves off from all people. However, it seems she may be repeating her mistake with Christian. Perhaps it is wise not to make one person the whole world. Perhaps each of us should keep a little light for ourselves.
