Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #121

Source

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction prompt!

In this post, we'll announce the winners from last month's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

  • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
  • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
  • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
  • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
  • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
  • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Highlighting @jennyzee1, with the story:

Lost in my world

Even at the age of nine, I was so eager to learn the songs of Miley Cyrus, who had been the protagonist of that movie, and at every little chance I got, I'd sing the songs with my tiny voice.

Curator's comment :

The CNF story by @jennyzee1 is very well written. It has an introduction that allows us to emotionally understand the climax of the story, in which a young girl, a movie fanatic, gets lost in her childhood memory and ends up singing at the top of her lungs in the first session of a university class. The teacher reacts strongly to this act, incomprehensible to her, and acts to take a stand on the student behavior he expects in his classroom. The advent of the ending is in keeping with the development of the whole story and includes a humorous undertone that leaves the reader with a smile.

Highlighting @popurri, with the story:

Dreaming of the trip

I knew I would arrive in fall and I dreamed of trees with brown, yellow and reddish leaves, falling and covering the streets. I imagined walking in the rain and wearing a coat to protect me from the cold. A climate so different from the warm tropical climate of my country.

Curator's comment :

popurri really wowed me with this beautiful creative nonfiction piece about her first plane trip, first trip outside of home country, and first trip to Peru, as a student. It is delicious with details, and the delight of a young person whose sense of adventure and excitement is fresh and alive!

Highlighting @zerah, with the story:

Stealing Her Day

Yes, it is beautiful, but it isn't my wedding dress. It's just a random dress my husband bought for me on one of his trips abroad." She picked another cloth from her bucket. "My wedding dress is way heavier and more beautiful than this. Its upper body was covered with shiny stones that sparkled under the lights. It stopped at my waist, and then it flowed down. The tail was so long that it needed two people to help me with it. My friends couldn't stop talking about it and you needed to see me in it. I looked like snow white from the fairy tale.

Curator's comment :

What a beautiful story this is that @zerah writes! It describes a process of empathy. While washing her clothes she sees coming a beautiful, sweet and polite woman who also exudes and spreads happiness. The beautiful character in her CNF tells her about the beauty of her wedding dress and in doing so reminisces about her wedding day. The story is contagious and makes @zerah lose herself in her own reverie. The denouement confirms the calm atmosphere of this very pleasant to read story that reconciles us with human kindness.

Highlighting @fashtioluwa, with the story:

Caught in the Act

I was speaking to Kayode, my friend who had fallen in love with a female musician from our country, Simi. Kayode is a lively guy; he's jovial, and everyone loves him. We all know he has a crush on a celebrity, and he remains convinced that he will meet her someday, even though their worlds are very much apart.

Curator's comment :

Fashtioluwa’s dialogue driven CNF is packed with tongue-in-cheek humour that is more than a little engaging and entertaining.
