Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #119

Source

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction prompt!

In this post, we'll announce the winners from last month's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

  • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
  • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
  • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
  • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
  • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
  • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Highlighting @zerah, with the story:

The Midnight Bake

Without countering her, I walked over to where I had stored my baking ingredients and pulled them out. Carefully I handed it over to Mama Chinedu and stepped back. I wasn't the type that interrupts when a person needs to get their mind off things by doing tiny chores or work.

Curator's comment :

Zerah writes a CNF piece that left me with a warm and fuzzy feeling. It also left me with a smile. She calibrates her description of a kitchen late at night so that we can smell the baking she is lovingly tending to. A knock at the door surprises her. Her neighbor, a matron married for twenty years, comes to bake, but it's obvious she needs an ear, someone to listen. The woman was celebrating her 20th wedding anniversary--except, she wasn't celebrating because it seemed her husband forgot. The neighbor left after doing some therapeutic baking. Later that nigh Zerah received a text. The husband didn't forget. He was simply waiting to surprise his wife. This story is well constructed, well paced, and full of sentiment.

Highlighting @nathy33, with the story:

Mom needs a hug

The 3 women fall to the floor in tears, their pain is felt all over the place. At this moment I am not the strong nurse I always was, I am not the brave woman everyone told me I was, I feel like a helpless child who needs to feel protected and safe.

Curator's comment :

nathy33 writes a heartbreaking, but ultimately uplifting CNF about her experience after the birth of her baby. Nathy33's child was in an incubator and unable to feed properly, but she shared the terror of having a sick child with all the women in the ward. Each woman felt that the fate of all the children was combined—each victory, a victory for all, each failure, each death… It’s a hard, but rewarding read.
