That is definitely a fork in the road, @sonofremi and @miles101. Sometimes a marriage cannot hold up under the tests of time.
Have you read and commented on at least two other writers' work in The Ink Well? We ask everyone who posts in our community to do this. It helps to build our community and gives our writers the support and encouragement to keep writing. Thank you!
Hello @sonofremi, You do address the prompt and you explore motivation of the character. It is a story heard many times. People 'grow apart'. As a curator I say you did a good job. As a reader and a person I say, you failed to arouse sympathy in me for your character.
I've lived a long time. One of the things I learned in life is that people often try to deflect responsibility for their choices. Marriage is a really hard thing. It is not just a physical union, it is a troth, a promise. It is a test of loyalty like no other.
Mr. Simpson justifies breaking this most solemn oath, this lifetime commitment because his marriage is no longer 'satisfying'. To me, that is a commentary on his character and not on the marriage. I think his lack of moral strength and loyalty will follow him in other commitments he makes for the rest of his life.
I would not say this as a curator, but I can say it as a reader responding to your story. You did a very good job of arousing my interest. A writer can wish for nothing more that.
Good writing.
An interesting story. My sense is that Mr. Simpson is either completely out of his league with this girl, or that he will soon tire of her crazy youthful exuberance. He seems like a conservative attorney, and she is a young girl who swears at office parties, dances on tables, drinks too much and kisses married men! But in the short term, she is the object of his desire, and this will give him the bravery he needs to leave his loveless, obligatory marriage.
This is a really sad touchy story, the feeling of not loving someone but the perso has been nothing but great to you. I hope she finds someone that will make her feel loved and worthy.
Love is magical and mysterious but it must be nurtured to keep those characteristics and when it loses the madness it disappears. Very well done your story
