The party & the ball dance

in The Ink Well11 months ago

Several high-class women were gathered for my aunt's party and none compared to me was lower in standard. I carried myself like an average lady would, looking around subtly and observing every gentleman around each corner. My eyes settled on numerous ones none of which caught my attention.

My aunt wanted a ball-like celebration for her birthday so I held my ball dress, raising it a little above my ankle as I walked deeper into the ballroom her designers prepared. I trod the marble floor a little too calmly like I was mimicking some ladies and their acts.

The hall was exquisite. Of course, as an atmosphere holding several women and men of high class, I wasn't expecting anything less. Either subtly being lost in my reverie or starting to imagine things, I staggered and almost tripped over a few goblets of local wine laid on the table.

I looked down before even having a thought of looking up at whoever it was who had just walked on the tail of my dress despite my extra cautious style. I was held back by the cause of the semi-disaster, causing me to turn back slowly, gently to see the source, only to be greeted by brown eyes which were flattered by a chestnut brown hair that was combed back in a Sir Lancelot style above his head and an alpha-like figure that made my petite self a little lesser than it was.

I strolled my eyes up and down his body which was fitted in a black coat that made his appearance nothing less intimidating. In the same stance we were, as he held my dress at the back to guide me from falling and my hands still holding my dress in the most elegant demeanor that I could muster, he spoke.

"Could you be at ease, my lady?" he said rhetorically as I managed to stand well and he assisted my stance in a better way as he adjusted my dress and did the same to his coat.

His voice sounded like something I had never heard before. He could be probably compared to how Zeus sounded if I had met him or any more of the Greek gods.

I was definitely beginning to exaggerate but though, he sounded mighty. I cleared my throat and composed myself back to my right state.

I was meant to be fuming with anger and with fury metamorphosing from every pore in my skin. He almost made me trip and fall, making me feel lesser of myself than I already was but at that moment, I felt otherwise.

The emotions within me weren't of anger. It was some other feelings other than that but I couldn't make out any words to speak.

"I should apologize for the abrupt mistake, but I'd ask you to a dance instead," he said with a smile I could not resist even if I had the deities living in me.

I stared at him without giving a response to him and in no time, he took my hand in his and walked me gently to the dance floor.

I couldn't overcome his aura. Like a compressor is diligent in its task, so was I to follow him.

He held my left hand and placed my right hand on his shoulder as he held my waist and pulled me a little closer to himself. I gasped at his gesture as I had never been or seen anyone as deviant as he was.

"Would you honor me with a word from your fine lips?" he asked, a little too seductive for what she could contain.

"Sabrina. Call me Sabrina," I replied, still moving according to his lead.

"That's a pretty sweet name but I wanna call you something unique. Like Rine," he said and I couldn't help but chuckle.

"Do you care to know my name, my lady?" I nodded and he smiled.

"How about we take things slow?"

Slow?

I laughed internally but managed to smile as my body was still taking in all the forwardness, how quick it all was rolling out to be. He was a fine man, just like my aunt called them.

I found a fine man just a few minutes into the ball as they would call it in America and I loved his appearance. I was starting to observe his demeanor and this would be the finale of my search.

This season seems to be a blessing on my cupid part and this kick-off party was a desired one. I was eventually going to make her parents proud.

I felt a continuous tap on my back. Gentle and calm, but I still could feel it. I shrugged severally.

"Sabrina,"

I heard my name again but it sounded far away like at the far end of the ballroom.

"Sabrina,"

The voice called again and I flickered my eyes open almost immediately.

"When I said to be down in five, I didn't mean hours. I meant minutes!" my aunt said as I squinted her eyes.

"It's broccoli, yeah?" I asked in a sleepy tone.

"Not broccoli, but something green. You could go for asparagus and some figs," she laughed, turning away.

The thought of my dream swept in and out of my head when she left. Was that an insight into how the ball was going to be? Was I to be prepared? I thought earnestly.

This was like a suspense; a cliffhanger and I wasn't ready to be the main character.

It's the Christmas season: give your friends a gift

... and here I was completely engrossed wondering if this was the start of an incredible romance with a well-meaning and dashing young knight, or whether he would end up being a scoundrel. And it was just a dream... noooo don't do this to us, @sabrinah This was a captivating #CNF. You drew me in with your lightly coquish writing. I am glad that you suggested at the end that this may be an insight into how things could actually turn out... it made me feel that you went off to the ball alive to all sorts of possibilities... which makes the reader continue to dream alongside you. Be careful of walking this line though. Although nicely delivered, stories that pull readers in and then drop them with a "it was all just a dream," generally tend to make the reader feel cheated.

@theinkwell, thank you for the kind words and warm welcome.

I apologize for wrapping this story up with a dreamy end. I will look at the links you sent and read the community rules to fully understand what's accepted and what's not.

I am happy you loved the story although I broke one of the community rules. I am inspired to write more.

I have a question, is it acceptable to write more than twice in the community? Apart from the weekly contest I have seen, am I allowed to submit any extra within the same week? @theinkwell

Also, if I pick a prompt from the old and recommended as seen on some of the announcement posts, should I drop my links on those posts or the recent announcement posts?

I loved reading the story you shared. It seems to me that the protagonist is experiencing a very common situation in life: daydreaming and letting the imagination take over instead of taking action and facing reality. Sometimes, it's easy to fall into the temptation of fantasizing and hoping that things will happen without doing anything about it.

She is missing out on the opportunity to enjoy the party and immerse herself in the real experience. It's understandable that she may feel some apprehension or uncertainty about the unknown, but sometimes it's necessary to take a step forward and dare to live life to the fullest.

So, I encourage the protagonist to attend the party and immerse herself in the fun! Greetings!

I daydream a lot and it translated into my dreams too. Thank you for your advice. I will live more and daydream less

You're welcome to the community and I love the manner in which you write. Your script is descriptive as it is in drawing.

I wish this was not a dream, the romance and dance was too eye-catching, thank you for the wonderful script

Thank you for your kind words and for the warm welcome. I will see you around the community then.

You're most welcome

Wow! I was smiling broadly while reading this, couldn't wait to know what happened in the end.
Only to find out it was a dream!
I love your story regardless

I apologize for the dreamy ending. I won't try that next time. I am glad you loved this.

Hi @sabrinah, I'm telling you that I was expecting another situation in the story and you surprised me a lot with the dream thing.
Greetings and happy holidays.
