When It Rains, It Pours

The alarmed buzzed noisily. It went on for a few more seconds until I lazily reached out for it to shut it out.

I groaned when I saw the time. It's already way past six in the morning, and I'm still in the bed, sitting sleepily, as if I don't have classes in the morning. Our classes start at 7:00—and it's something that I really dislike during my Friday schedule.

I peered outside and saw that it's still raining. It's been raining for hours, and I'm secretly hoping that the classes will get suspended.

I opened my phone and let out a disappointed grunt when I saw that there's no memo for class suspension.

"Gette, do you have class today? Some of the schools already announced suspension of classes. It's been raining non-stop, and for all I know, some of the streets now are flooded," said my mother, who's arranging the basins and pails outside our house.

"I don't know Ma, but we definitely are still obliged to go to school even if a pail of rainwater will pour down on us. As long as there's no memo, classes it is..."

My mother continued rambling, while I swiftly stripped down and went inside the bathroom. I shivered as the cold breeze went in. I dipped my hands in the water and almost shouted an expletive when I discovered it's extremely cold.

'First I woke up badly, now this cold water! Great! I'm going to be really late!', I exclaimed.

I forced myself to take a bath, and after many pauses, I finally finished taking a bath.

"Do you really have classes, Gette? The sky shows no sign of clearing up. Maybe it's the best if you—"

"No, Ma, we really have classes if no memo is released," I said reluctantly while wolfing down my food.

The thunder boomed, and I almost fell out of my chair due to shock. After recovering from that brief shock, I immediately continued my morning routine.

'What a bad morning to start the day.'

I pushed past the cramped vehicle. I uncomfortably sat next to the damp space, and I scowled when the driver let the old woman in.

'We're already cramped here, bastard? Are you planning to flatten your tires?!', exclaimed my mind.

The other passengers seemed to be indifferent to her obvious struggle, so left with no choice, I moved towards the damp space and offered my space to the old woman.

"Thank you, dear...", she said weakly as she sat sluggishly in my space. Since the vehicle was full, the driver drove faster.

The roads were wet, and there aren't many vehicles going out when it's raining hard. I gazed outside and saw that the streets were almost deserted.

As the vehicle sped up, I felt my teeth chatter as the strong gust of wind and drizzle went inside. When the familiar burger joint went into view, I held my bag and reached up for the handrail.

"Lugar lang!", (Kindly stop) I called out loudly while banging at the steel handrail. It took some more seconds before the vehicle halted. I pushed past again the other passengers and quickly jumped my way down. It's still raining, so I jogged my way to the nearest shed and rummaged my bag for an umbrella.

"Is it already 7:30, sis? You're really serious?! Oh no, we're late now!", the girl beside me exclaimed. The girl on her left just let out a harsh sigh.

'Wait—what? 7:30! I'm really past late now!"

I started to half-run and walk towards our campus. The vehicle stop was quite far from our campus, so when I noticed that I'm already near our campus, I started to run. The streets were almost bare save for the usual vendors, so I maneuvered my way easily inside the cramped alleys. I jumped over the puddles, and I ran faster when I saw my campus in the distance.

I was catching my breath when I reached the gate. The guard looked at me curiously, which I just ignored because I'm desperate to reach our room as quick as possible.

When I entered the building, silence immediately greeted me. I felt that there's something wrong.

I walked curtly towards our room, and I almost gasped in shock when I saw its empty.

'Why are my classmates not here?', I silently pondered.

I opened my phone and instantly made a facepalm.

'God... It's Saturday today,' I realized.

The guards who's patrolling around the ground floor saw me. He seemed to notice my confusion.

"Miss, the classes of the third year are on the second floor," he said while pointing up.

I hurriedly muttered thanks and ran back towards the gate. The guard grinned when he saw me. It's apparent that he realized that I don't have class schedule for today.

I want to shrink in embarrassment.

'So much for waking up on the wrong side of the bed!'

Sort:

Oh my! That would be a very startling realization. I'm sure it happens to a lot of people at one time or another. Hopefully after you recovered from embarrassment, you felt relief at not being late and got to enjoy an unexpected day off!

It was indeed a rather startlingly late realization, but I did try to enjoy the rest of the day—only that I'm not fond of rainy days... Thanks for stopping by @jayna!
