Helena sat on the chair, unmoving. Her chocolate brown eyes were glazed over as she looked mindlessly outside her window. Her mind was in turmoil at the news she received just the night before.
Helena and her husband were a happy couple. Both were ambitious but they managed to remain in a happy marriage despite their busy careers.
Helena was a woman with wavy black hair, tanned skin, chocolate brown eyes and short stature. She knew she did not look exceptional, rather her looks were very common in her hometown. But despite this, she is a very ambitious and confident woman, and wished to get out of the small town she grew up in. She worked very hard for that. And while working was where she met her husband, Benjamin.
Benjamin looked the total opposite of her. He had dirty blonde hair, jade green eyes, fair skin and was a good foot taller than Helena. Unlike her, Benjamin was a little shy, but confident enough to not shy away from meeting women.
The two found each other and after a few months of courting and going on dates, they finally got married.
All was well in their life.
However, tragedy struck the couple. The two of them got into an accident while on their way home from work. Helena, who woke up later than her husband was told of a very terrible news.
"I'm sorry Mrs. Collins but you lost the child." the doctor said in a quiet voice.
Helena, whose eyes were wide, held her stomach unconsciously. She did not even know she was pregnant!
"And I'm afraid, because of how serious your injuries were from the accident, you might never be able to conceive again."
Helena spent the entire night crying. Mourning for the child she lost and the fact that she would never be able to have one. Beside her, Benjamin mourned with her.
Helena continued staring outside, her mind in turmoil. After she got married, she had always dreamed of kids of her own, children she had with her beloved husband. She always imagined what her kids would look like once she had them.
"I hope our eldest is a boy." she used to tell her husband. "He'll have my hair and fierce expression, but he'll have your eyes, fair skin and height. Definitely your height."
She remembered Benjamin chuckling at her words. "Why the fierce expression?"
"So he can scare off anyone who would try and bully his little sister."
"I guess our second child will be a girl."
"Yes. She'd be your carbon copy, from the hair, to the eyes and even the complexion."
"Why not yours? You're beautiful honey." Benjamin would say while pecking her lips.
"I know, but my carbon copy would be our third child, and I won't mind whether they're a boy or a girl."
"So you want three kids?"
"No, I want at least a dozen, with two pairs of twins." she would replied jokingly.
Helena cried at the memory.
"I can no longer have that."
She cried once again. She didn't even notice her husband coming into her room and enveloping her in a hug.
Benjamin could only mourn with his wife, promising her and himself that she would make her happy despite the tragedy in their life. He steeled himself for that. But as of the moment, they would mourn and would await a bright future.
'One step at a time.'
Benjamin used to be very nervous whenever the topic of children got brought up. He knew his parents wanted him to produce an offspring soon since they wanted to see their grandchildren.
"We're not getting any younger." his mother used to tell him.
As the only child of his family, he was aware he was the only one to fulfill his parents' wishes. Of course, he shared that worry with his wife and found out she was very welcoming of a child as well. Unfortunately, the accident left his wife barren.
"I'm so sorry Helena." he cried as he hugged her tight. His once strong arms felt like jelly to himself. He felt so weak. "This is all my fault.
Benjamin was the one driving that unfortunate night.
It took several nights for the couple to come into terms with their situation, but perhaps they can never fully accept it.
"What about adoption?" Benjamin heard his cousin say a week after the accident. "It can be done, especially if it's someone related to either of you. I heard Helena has a really big family right?"
"I don't know. I don't think it would sit well with her."
"How about talking to her about it first."
That night, Benjamin pooled all the courage he could to talk to his wife about it. Perhaps, they still had a second chance at being parents. He just hoped the talk would go well.
~The End~
A/N: Why do I feel unsatisfied with the ending. 😭

Again, coz you left me hanging there. The start of the story was great. You really gave me enough details to imagine the couple in my mind. The story is sad though and also is a sad reality with many couples out there.
Totally agree with you. And to be honest I pity couples who try so hard to have kids but takes a long time to have one or never at all. Thank you for taking interest in my story @indayclara !!!
This is a great observation. The ending is unsatisfying because it is not a resolution. Readers love happy endings, but that can't always be. More than that they want a conclusion.
This is open ended, literally. We, the readers earned the right to know how the talk went because we stayed with you throughout the story.
It's a good story (Although, the word barren is frowned upon in some circles. A woman may not be able to have children but can still be full of life and vigor, can still give rise to ideas and be inspired. Barren doesn't capture that vitality) You have described several conflicts. The characters are interesting.
Thank you for sharing this with us, @nichebezarius
Thank you for the constructive criticism @theinkwell . I'll think about those advice in my next story. 😅😅😅😁
Beautiful story. The tragedy is really very sad. Since Benjamin is the only child, he might need to have a child of his own, to continue his family lineage. Captivating story indeed. Nice publication.
What are you saying? That he should stray from his wife simply so he can have a biological child? What happened to 'in sickness and in health?' What happened to 'until death do us part'? What happened to loyalty, and love? Are these commitments only binding in good times? When fortune smiles?
Curious about your thoughts on this.
That quote is quite fitting to be honest but I guess I'm a little hopeful? 😅😅😅😁
I don't understand:
Do you mean he should go off on his own and have a child without his wife? How would he do that and keep his marriage vows?
It's a little confusing since the story is sort of a cliff hanger (definitely a cliff hanger) so we will never know. Maybe in the future, if I gain more motivation and inspiration I can make it into a full-blown novel or short story then I can finish it and I can give a satisfying ending. It's a big 'IF' though. 😅😅😅
Thank you for your words @greatideas .
Such amazing story I really enjoyed reading through till the end I think Benjamin needs to gather courage and speak up properly it might be a second chance for them to be happy again.
Thank you for your words @justinpencilz . And the interest. Indeed, Benjamin will need the courage.
