A Phase

It was a hot afternoon, and the heat clung to skin like some sort of stubborn flies. I sat quietly with my hand fan, lost in thought, reflecting on the idea of finally starting something with the money I had been saving for so long. Suddenly, there was a loud knock at the door, followed by a familiar voice. It was Samuel, my friend and brother from another womb. As we sat together, gisting about different things. I couldn't forget what had been running through my mind before Samuel's came.

"So Samuel, there's something I have been meaning to tell you," I said, my voice uncertain. "I have been thinking of starting a small business with the money I have saved."

With a smile, Samuel asked gently, "Let me hear it all. What's the plan, and what business line are you thinking of?"

"I just think, since hair is something ladies can't do without, venturing into selling wigs and attachments would be a good start."

Samuel leaned back in his chair, pausing before he spoke. "A wigline? Selling attachments? Wait, are you indeed serious about this?"

"Why do you sound like it's no good idea, Samuel? Isn't it something worth venturing into? I have done my research, and I believe it will go well."

He observed me for a moment. "You’re really serious about this idea, aren't you?"

"Ah ah, of course. The beauty of any woman is in looking good, and fashion is part of that. Hair is essential when we speak of fashion. Everyone wears hair to look good. I just need to take a step."

Noticing my seriousness and firm interest, the calmness in his voice shifted to something more like a strong warning. "Let me be honest with you. I know you well, you tend to get really emotional when things don’t go as planned. I’m not trying to discourage you, but I wouldn’t advise jumping into something you don't have any idea of, you need someone who is already deep in the wig business that would coach you."

I felt a pang of doubt, though something in me pushed me to stay confident. "Alright, let me try to understand where you are coming from."

"Starting a business takes real courage, and it's even riskier when you don’t fully understand the industry. You know how emotional you can get over small things. Now imagine the ups and downs that come with running a business—competition, failures, and having to pick yourself back up. You have always been a bit away with the fairies."

"Away with the fairies, this isn’t the first time you have said that to me."

"Yeah, I have used it countless times, haven’t I? And that’s why I said it again. You dream big, but sometimes you say things that don’t seem possible in reality. So hearing you sound so serious this time is surprising."

"I know I dream big, but this time I have planned everything. The money is available."

Sitting up, Samuel asked, "So you think the money you have is enough? Do you have a backup plan in case things go wrong? I don’t want anyone falling on my shoulders. Take your time and understand the business line you want to venture into."

I started reading meaning to his words. "But what if my plan works out? Should I let my fear hold me back from my future success?"

He hissed, shaking his head. "Why are you always after big things? You need to ask yourself some questions and think about the best way forward."

At first, I felt disappointed, but I reminded myself, "This isn’t just a dream like the ones I have had before."

After everything, Samuel stood up and smiled. "I have said all I can. I’m not trying to stop you from chasing your dream oo."

After Samuel left, I sat in silence, reflecting on his words. As usual, I found myself away from the fairies. But this time, I knew I needed more than dreams. Working at the salon was my first real step toward understanding the hair business, and soon I would be ready to take the leap with confidence. After the learning phase, I know I will be grounded, walk with bold steps, and make my dream a reality one day.
