I am nothing...

I am nothing but a speck of dust inside the infinite expanse of space, floating freely, traveling aimlessly towards the emptiness of the void, ah, but I am not alone.

We are many and we are one.

Now, change is perennial and I can see us moving at a constant velocity that is only apparent in my point of view.

I am nothing but a speck of dust within the confines of space, binding, burning, creating something to fill the emptiness of the void, ah, but now I am alone.

We were many, now we are one.

Now, change is perpetual and I am moving at a constant velocity that is only apparent from a distant point of view.

I am something more than a speck of dust, a swirling mass among the stars in the orchestra that is space, changing, evolving, shining, penetrating the four corners of the void, ah, but the end is near.

Now, change is eternal and I am collapsing at a constant velocity that is apparent from any point of view.

We are one, now we are many.

I am nothing but a speck of dust inside the infinite expanse of space, floating freely, traveling aimlessly towards the emptiness of the void.

...but I am not alone

Author's Note

  • The prompt is: Inheritance

  • I was going to sleep, deciding not to join the contest... but as I lay awake a thought came to mind, so I grab a dictionary. Inheritance can also be defined as the transmission of qualities from parent to offspring and I don't think this is just limited to carbon-based life forms. (this is still fiction writing 😅)

  • I read a story like this when I was a kid, got no idea what it is called. A poem probably, for some reason it doesn't look like one and also feels like one at the same time... though, I don't know exactly what makes a poem a poem.

  • I have to admit I was inspired by @adamada.stem for showing me #STEMgeeks and @yaziris post Geodesics, General Relativity, And The Illusion Of Gravity! . SCIENCE! 👨‍🔬

  • I read a whole bunch of research materials on how a star is born and dies here are some: Star formation, Star, Stellar Evolution (I just had fun reading didn't need to read all that and some more) 😂

In the process of getting taught United you will glimmer, no matter if you are bound or have to lose your identity, the light will be inherited by you.

I love the unique approach to the prompt. There is indeed an interconnection within the universe

thank you!

Wow! 👏 That was really beautiful.

I love it! As I was reading I thought, damn.. relevant to my post, then I saw your comment.

Thanks for tagging and linking my post, glad it inspired something. I'm flattered😊

You are welcome.. and thank you also!

This was a really an unusual post for inheritance but I liked it!!! Hehhee

Thinking of what it would feel like...being stardust. Hehehe floating, waiting, exploring...

Timeless

Hmmm nice thoughts here ❣️

It is unusual, even for me it is... glad you like it!

Thinking of what it would feel like...being stardust. Hehehe floating, waiting, exploring...

Timeless

Thinking of how to follow this up...with her being stardust. Hmmm standing, admiring, holding...

Endless

Thank you for everything... I really appreciate it!

This is beautiful, Mat. What a great take on inheritance! The constant cycle of renewal in the Universe. As human beings, made up of the same elements as the stars, you think we could learn a little from all of this... 😉 Learn to come together for the greater manifestation of energy, expand and spread that energy even further through the Universe.

I seriously don't know if we could.

But I believe it isn't impossible that one day we will be one with the universe... and learn its secrets.

Thank You Very Much! I always appreciate you stopping by...

This was interesting, a very unique spin on the prompt.

Thank you :)

You are welcome

Hi @khoola. I like what I read and the literary figures of repetition you used.
I am not a literary critic.
It seems to me that this is the beginning of a story. By the way, a great start.
Cheers.

Thank you very much.. glad you like it!

Hi @khoola. Please make sure you're familiar with our community rules which are posted at the top of our community home page, as we only accept fiction. This is all spelled out at the top of our writing prompt posts as well. We'll put this in the category of "speculative fiction." Otherwise, we would typically mute this in the community. Now you know. Thank you!

I am sorry, 😭...

I thought fiction is just something invented by the imagination but when I read in a broader definition:

"Typically, the fictionality of the work is publicly acknowledged and the audience expects the work to deviate in some ways from the real world rather than presenting only factually accurate portrayals or characters who are actual people. Because fiction is generally understood to not fully adhere to the real world, the themes and context of a work, such as if and how it relates to real-world issues or events, are open to interpretation." - src

so, it also needs to deviate from facts... with the research I did, even a grade-schooler would attest that the narrative is scientifically accurate. 😭 but, I am glad it is not a poem.

Thank you for putting it in "speculative fiction".

The definition of fiction is certainly up for debate. The one you provided is very good. We would add that in general fiction tells a story, about one or more characters, who interact through action and dialog and experience a conflict which forms the arc of the story as it is developed and resolved. Of course many stories deviate somewhat from this pattern. But if you aim to incorporate these elements in your stories, your readers will immediately recognize that they are reading fiction, rather than a poem or any other type of narrative.

Our catalog of fiction writing tips provides insights and guidance on each of these elements.

Good luck and keep writing! We appreciate you. And we are all a work in progress.

Thank You Very Much!

I have a vague memory of it from childhood... like I read something of this pattern from children's picture books, teaching about science using a story like incorporating wind, clouds, and mountains making inanimate objects talk and come alive.. just to teach rain.

But it was so long ago... and I can't find anything online about it.

But if you aim to incorporate these elements in your stories, your readers will immediately recognize that they are reading fiction, rather than a poem or any other type of narrative.

Thank you very, and I am really sorry for my lack of knowledge about writing, I'll try my best to learn more.

Thank you for your support as always.

Keep learning, keep writing! We love to see writers develop the craft of fiction writing, which is why we provide feedback and have so many prompts and writing resources.

(We just also have to run a tight ship on what we allow people to post here, or the community quickly falls into disrepair.)
