That sunday was indeed an enjoyable one. I had all the fun that I hadn't experienced in months, and every single food and snack I came across, I made sure to have a taste of them. I was having the time of my life, and though my friends objected to it because they feared for my health, I didn't really care.
"Jane, don't you think you're doing too much? Will you be okay?" Ella asked me.
"Doing too much. How? Why wouldn't I be okay?" I replied, going for my third plate of ice cream.
"You know how your tummy can get sometimes. You're taking way too much sugar than normal. How are you going to handle yourself later?" She asked again.
I flashed her a smile. She wasn't wrong about my belly. I had a very soft bowel, and whenever I consumed too much sugar, or spicy foods, I end up spending most of my day in the toilet. I understood that she didn't want me to have a tough day the next day, but I on the other hand, I was feeling good. Before now, I wouldn't have made it to the third plate of ice cream before my stomach starts to ache. And with every other junk I had eaten, I wasn't feeling any discomfort, so I didn't give too much thought to what she said.
"Ella, I'm good. You never know when we can have this much of a good time again. The semester is already stressful. We might as well have all the fun we need today. Let tomorrow worry for itself, and moreover, my stomach feels good. Maybe I'm eating the right snacks."
And so the day ran on, and we had fun till evening. At around 7 pm, we decided to call the fun off and return back to school. En route, my other friend, Divine kept glancing at me.
"You've been staring." I said to her.
"Well, I'm just wondering how you're still fine with all the things you've had. I hope it stays that way till after tomorrow."
"Jane, I think you should stop at a pharmacy when we get to school. Just incase." Ella added.
"Yes ma'am." I replied. She rolled her eyes, and I laughed. How could the two of them be so worried over nothing?
By the time we got back to school, every pharmacy had closed for the day.
"What are you going to do now?" Bella asked.
"Well, so far, I feel good. Hopefully, like Divine earlier said, it'll remain that way tomorrow." I replied. We said our goodbyes, and retired to our rooms for the night.
The night went by smoothly, and I slept like a log. By morning, I was still feeling good, but to be on a safer side, I emptied my bowels before leaving for classes.
On my way, I ran into Divine. She was on her way to class as well.
"Is Ella not coming?" I asked.
"She's already there. She left early for an assignment. How did you sleep? Does your stomach hurt?"
"I slept fine, and I feel good." As if disagreeing with my response, my stomach made a growling sound. Divine turned to look at me.
"Are you okay? Should we go back to the room? We still have about 30 mins before the class will start."
"I'm okay."
"Did you eat something else this morning?"
"No, I did not. You worry too much, Divine."
When we got to class, Divine told Bella what had happened on the way. I laughed and told her I was fine.
"Jane, this isn't a laughing matter. We have a very long day ahead of us." Bella said.
The first class went by smoothly. Same with the second class, but by the end of the third class, I was already sweating, despite the cold weather. There was goosebumps all over my skin, and my stomach caused me a great discomfort.
"Jane, are you okay?" Bella asked. I shook my head, as I couldn't even speak.
The class was over, but immediately after that, we were supposed to have a compulsory practical for everyone. And it didn't look like I was going to survive it. I prayed and wished for my stomach to be calm for another two hours, but it got worse. Bella took me to a hidden corner, but it was too dirty. We returned back to class. She called to the attention of Divine, and she hurried over to our seat.
"Jane, you'd have to manage. Once the woman takes the attendance of everyone, we'll sneak you out." Divine suggested.
"Can you manage?" Bella asked.
I didn't respond. At this point, it felt like I was going to die. Then like an angel, my course rep came into the class, and gave a heart-warming announcement.
"The practical will be held tomorrow. The woman can't make it. Her daughter is sick."
"Thank you, Jesus!" I screamed out, and bolted out of the classroom, leaving my friends to explain to the others that I had a situation, so they wouldn't misunderstand and think I was happy about the woman's daughter illness.
I boarded a bike, and asked the driver to drive fast. Immediately I stepped into my room, I dashed into the toilet and emptied my bowels.
While in the toilet, I kept thanking God for the cancellation of the practical. Though it was called off for a sad reason, I was still glad that a major crisis was averted. That was a close call, and I was lucky to have survived.
