Deep

Jay sat on the precipice. The long drop over the water was exciting for him. It made him feel alive. His legs dangled over the smooth, wet rock that hovered over the rushing waves. The sound of a million bubbles filled his ears, but his delight was imperfect. He longed for her; he wished that she could be near.

Blue hues rose like a melody in the rainbow of water spray. He tried to look through it to see its heart, but the sheer exuberance of the shower left him breathless.

The joy of the water was difficult to describe to strangers. For a moment, his effervescent spirit faltered. He felt out of sync. The purple haze, a mystery of unfathomable proportion.

But then he saw her grin rise like a specter on the geyser—unbound happiness. Like light, like hope, like a future.

She was there, diving into the white foam. Her backpack glistened with the reflection of sunlight. She was sturdy. She knew what to do.

Then he was beside her, holding her hand. Smiling before the descent.

There were pearls in the water. They radiated a million moons.

Perfect, treasure.

The soul of the universe.

A worthy pursuit.

Her family had been diving for years. He was the first of his family’s generation.

She was like a gem. She understood decompression, and she was free with her knowledge and her teachings.

Like a maestro.

An instructor, a teacher.

They had been so indescribably good together. always the best haul. The ultimate prize: Top money.

He had put his brother through school.

She had paid for her father’s cancer treatment.

They were an indestructible team.

Pearl divers, supreme

On a sunlit day, when the waters churned with defiance, she dived nonetheless.

He sat on the precipice and saw her shadow. It was blue and purple, much like the rainbow.

He raised himself into a tackle.

He heard her whisper, "Be careful, my love. I’ll always be with you. Be careful. It’s not all about the pearls."

Then he dove. A deep, deep, penetrating dive.

Whew... this took my breath away! Love, loss, pain... throwing care to the wind. No matter how much experience we gather, the risks will always remain - they are only somewhat mitigated. I sense that the ending is not centered on tragedy but rather on surrender and making peace with what is... finding some space and a way to connect... but it is left quite open to interpretation. I simply prefer to believe in hope and renewal here. A beautiful thoughtful and reflective piece, my Stylish. Quite poetic! 💗 !LUV !ALIVE !Hug

Your writing carries me... 💞

I loved your story, always with that poetic touch that you impregnate to each line. I loved how you gave that magic to the trade of diving giving it that romanticism that enchants when reading. Letters as beautifulas the pearls themselves.

Thanks for sharing.
Good day.

Thank you so much for your lovely comment ❤️🤗❤️

Such a dangerous profession but you describe it as so beautiful, which it must be too, of course. I love how you leave this open, hinting at the possibility they might be separated by death. Shades of The Big Blue, one of my all time favorite movies. 💙🐬

Thank you for your insight. Yes, you have it: separated by death, but he still has to dive.

Then he drove deep. It is nice meeting someone you can relate with, it makes things understandable. There is beauty in this story and I love it.

❤️🤗💕

Yay! 🤗

There's a delicious mix of love and loss, hope and glee in this writing. It's beautiful like a well made kilt. Prose that's too poetic to he just prose. So glad to have read this today @itsostylish 🌺🌺

Like a well made kilt: that’s the best compliment I’ve ever received. Hehe 😉

I'm happy to have given it then. Hope you're having a wonderful day.🤗

Nostalgia has so much power and can be so illustrative and so clear. A story that can be read two ways.

It's not just about the pearls.

Her words are like a command . Is it a warning or is it an invitation?
Lovely read where the reader's own way of being can interpret the ending. Thank you, precious @itsostylish !
