Yes, when you are young, you always think you know it all. But, it's not like that. Fortunately, our protagonist was very lucky, just like his cousin. Imagine, if John had run over the old couple, or if they had been caught by the police, committing that infraction!
As for the girls, yes, for sure, John and his cousin will have their chance to reconnect.
