Not appeasing Ala – mother earth, was better than his present condition? No, he didn't think it through. And again, it was not done intentionally and Ala would understand and probably favored him after he must have appeased them.

It's the intention that matters.

Yes, he didn't think it through, but can you really blame him? All the appeasement and burial rites would have rendered his family wretched, and he was a young, promising man who didn't want to destroy the wealth he was building. Towards, the end, he had lost the will to live, and wanted to at least die with his dignity 😢
