Highs And Loaves

No one had ever sustained a business for as long as the Adeyemi's has; it all started with Adeyemi, or Mr Ade as he was popularly called, with a passion for creating recipes which was loved by his customers, but it wasn't his delicious recipe alone, his wife, Mrs Ade who was good with their finances, kept the business running, she made sure the accounts were paid, the staff were fed and together, they made a formidable team.

Their son Ola grew up watching his parent grow their bread and cake business, and has always been fascinated with how his parents combined the various ingredients to make such delicious goodness. As a child, he would often play with the flour, watch the dough rise, and was never too satisfied to not want a bite of his parents' delicious bread and cake.

As he grew much older, he also learned the ins and outs of the business and would often help out, his dad was proud of him, and even thought, maybe one day, he would carry on the business, but he was a bit disappointed when Ola told him about his desire to become an engineer instead of carrying on his father's bakery business, "he wanted to build machines instead", he said

Though Mr Adewanted something else for him, still he stood by his child and made sure he supported him to achieve his dreams, even as it meant taking on more debt to pay for his tuition. His mum, on the other hand, didn't mind his choice of career, as long as her son was happy with what he did.

After a few years of study, Obi finally graduated from university, making his parent really proud. He also landed a job with a top firm in Lagos; their joy knew no bounds, as they threw a big party to celebrate his new heights. Mama Ola made all his favorite dishes: jollof rice, plantain, fried chicken, and, of course, plenty of freshly baked bread, as they celebrated with family and friends.

But the high was short-lived. A year later, Ola lost his job. He tried several other firms for several months, but luck was not on his side anymore. He was devastated, and like he had let his family down. His days were filled with misery, not being able to fend for himself anymore. He had no choice but to return to his parents at Ibadan, unsure of what to do next.

He felt so ashamed of himself, but his parents welcomed him back home with open arms, making him feel at home, and encouraged him not to feel down, as he had begun to question whether he was cut out for the engineering world .

"My son, life is filled with ups and downs, but we must make sure not to give up, as long as we have life, we have hope."

His mum said.

After days of sulking and locking himself up in his rooms, he finally opened his doors again and joined his parents in their bakery business once again.

One day, he was working on a cake order for a teenager, and became inspired to design a cake in the shape of a Range Rover, he had heard the boy wishing he could have a cake shaped as his favourite car, but his dad told him, Adeyemi's cake was the best for its delicious taste, not construction or designing, making the boy, give up on his idea.

But this conversation sparked an idea in him, and his creative juices began to flow as he started designing. When the customer came for his order, he was so happy to see Ola create his son's wish, and soon, word spread out, and more orders started pouring in for custom cakes.

Ola realized that he didn't have to choose between engineering and baking; he could combine them. He also started experimenting with machines that could help automate the baking process, making it faster and easier.

Adeyemi's Bakery also started getting more orders from all over the city, same as Ola's machines. Bakers were amazed when they saw the machine make their work easier. He and his parents were working together again, this time as partners in every sense.

One cool evening, during dinner, Mr Ade spoke up and said, "You know, sometimes the best things in life come from unexpected places. Ola, you thought you were taking a step back, but God was actually moving you forward. and thank God you didn't give up."

This was so pleasant to read. When I got to where Ola chose his career, I knew that somehow, engineering would bring him back home and to bakery.
I also imagined Ola making intricate designs on cakes that would have only been seen on machines and engines.

Well done. Good story.
