See You Yesterday: Inkwell prompt #153

“Kiss me, come on, kiss me; you promised to kiss me when you’re done with your studies" Cynthia, a 22-year-old athlete, keeps nagging Klaus, her boyfriend, to kiss her. He was a scholar with seven Ph.D.s in physics, mathematics, and phantom energy. He had been working on a project for 3 years now, and he believed he would have a breakthrough in the project soon. "But, babe, you can see I’m not done calculating the sequence to the table neo-electron that will help increase the phantom machine” Klaus replied. Klaus is a workaholic man who never stops working until he gets his results. He was tall and handsome. Ladies are always around him because of the glasses he always wears on his face.

Klaus has been at his desk working nonstop since last night. He remembered Cynthia coming to meet him at midnight and asking him to come sleep, but he refused because he wasn’t done. He also promised to come when he was done, and he would plant a big kiss on her face. It’s daytime now, and he is still not done. Klaus has been working on a time-travelling machine since he got his 6th PhD without any breakthrough.

Cynthia has been putting up with his busy schedule and lack of attention to her because she really loves him and believes in his dream. They have been together since they were in high school, so breaking up with Klaus was never a choice for her.

“Please, stop what you’re doing and let’s go to the mail together; there is something I want to get, please." Cynthia kept nagging, which made Klaus give up on what he was doing just to please her. While at the mail, Cynthia went to the grocery section to get some food stuff. She noticed a man in a hoodie and nose mask kept walking behind her, so she stopped to confront him, but to her biggest shock, it was Klaus, but with more beards. Klaus was never with beards when they left the house this morning, and that wasn’t the cloth he was putting on, she thought to herself.

She was about to scream, but the tears in her eyes made her mute. He was looking at her with so much longing in his eyes. He then said to her, “I wish I had kissed you every day; I wish I had given you all the attention in the world. I wanted to tell you I love you because I never did.” After saying this, he put on his disguise and left the mail. Cynthia was still shocked when she heard Klaus voice from afar.“Lady, are you done? I want to head back home on time because I don’t have time.

She wanted to explain what happened to Klaus, but he refused to listen, insisting she tell him anything she wants to say when they get home. While on their way home, at a sharp turn, a truck from nowhere appeared before them. Without knowing what to do, Klaus drove out of the road and struck a tree. They both lost consciousness immediately, and the next time Klaus opened his eyes, it was the nurse he saw. “Where is Cynthia?” That was the first thing he said. The doctor told him the sad news of Cynthia's death, and this drove him nuts.

After three months of being discharged, Klaus never left his home and focused all his attention on his time-travelling machine just to save the woman he loved. He kept working on his machine with so many failed attempts at time travel. Days turn to weeks, weeks to months, and months to years. It had already been 5 years since the accident, and he was about to try his next attempt. After confirming all the sequences, he saw that the machine was stable. He wanted to send an animal as a test, but then he became tired and started crying because he missed Cynthia.

After setting the date and time for time travel, he stood up and walked slowly to the machine. “If I succeed, I will see you, and if I fail, I will still come see you," he said. The machine started emitting different colours, the space in the room started shrinking, and a loud boom sound blasted out of the house.

With blurry eyes and a weak body, Klaus stood up and noticed it was night. He found himself behind his house, close to their garden, and made his way back to the front door. As he was about to open the door, he heard Cynthia laughing. He paused for a moment, to be sure. He went to the kitchen window, and he saw his younger self and Cynthia in the kitchen, making jokes and laughing. He walked away, promising himself to tell her those words she had always wanted to hear but had never told her.
