Jade looked at Ruben in frustration for the umpteenth time. In her eyes there was absolute determination, but also fear, a very intense fear of losing him. Ruben looked at her again, his pleading eyes seemed to beg her. He didn't need to speak to express what he was thinking.

Jade tried to calm herself. She tugged at her dress and turned her back to him. Ruben could do nothing in the face of a determined and stubborn Jade.

—Who will I be without you? —Jade asked and looked up at the church cross.

—Please don't make this any harder —he began to say in a soft, almost angelic voice.

Jade crossed her arms and, to Ruben, she looked as beautiful as the flowers that adorned her dress.

—Please... —said Ruben again.

—You can't imagine the pain I feel. It is as if I am in a state of imposed defeat. I don't see a happy destiny for me. I don't see myself with anyone but you.

Jade was relieved to say what she felt, but suddenly a shudder ran through her from end to end and then there was much silence, which made her turn away. Despite her infuriation, she couldn't deeply hate Reuben's decisions every time she looked into his eyes. Ruben's eyes were her weak point and made her feel fragile. Ruben had those pure, innocent eyes that could be trusted, gazed into and fallen in love with.

—Why are you crying? —Jade asked in a whisper and slowly wiped Ruben's tears with her delicate hands.

—Jade, I love you —Ruben confessed. —I love you. But God's call is stronger than anything else. God is asking me to give myself to the priesthood. Out of compassion, I ask you to understand my destiny.

Jade looked at him sadly, with her hands placed around Reuben's angelic face, and it was hard for her to pull away. She found it hard to accept the reality that Ruben had completely immersed himself in his faith and that the day of his departure for the seminary was drawing ever closer. No other moment in his life would be as fragile as this one.

For Ruben, who had always felt peace and harmony in contemplating Jade, the situation now overwhelmed him. The sunlight illuminated Jade's dark hair and velvety skin, highlighting her natural beauty. However, this wonderful scene that once comforted him now oppressed him inside.

Ruben wondered if he had understood God's wishes correctly and if he would ever truly forget Jade and his feelings for her. Was his faith stronger than the love he felt for his lifelong friend? And he felt his vocation, which he had clung to for years, begin to fade.

She finally raised her face and met Ruben's gaze. She looked so fragile. The air between them seemed to grow thick. Jade's eyes now reflected a desire to understand. Ruben's seemed to want to get to the end of the fight.

Ruben remembered those days when he and Jade would meet in the churchyard, those days when she would confess her deepest desires and fears to him and he would silently pray for her happiness. For Jade, he was her only and great friend. What will happen to Jade when I am no longer by her side?, he wondered, while a pang of pain pierced his chest.

That night Ruben did not sleep. He spent hours kneeling on the floor of his simple darkened room, silently crying out for answers, as he remembered words from Sunday sermons about love and sacrifice. But would he be brave enough to sacrifice his love for Jade for his devotion to God? At dawn, he finally got up from the floor, feeling overcome with indecision. He looked up at the wooden window through which a few rays of sunlight were already beginning to filter through and, for the first time, he was absolutely certain which path he should take.

Several years later, Ruben found himself in front of the church he had attended so many Sundays when he was young. He felt nostalgic and happy at the same time. The reason for his visit was the pilgrimage in honor of the Virgin of the Miraculous Medal. Ruben was already a priest and was walking with the people to ask for salvation. Then, unexpectedly, he met the eyes of a beautiful woman looking at him from a distance. It was Jade. The years had passed, but not for her, she was still the same as the last time he saw her. They looked at each other with complicity, until a little girl ran towards her and demanded her attention. Ruben felt infinite peace and great love.

《God bless you forever》, he whispered.

End

Esa noche Rubén no durmió.

Love has a way of remaining evergreen. It was a tough decision for Reuben. I believe he would have preferred to go for both options if possible. We meet to part and we part to meet. Life!!!

A beautiful ending, an interesting story dear.
