Enjoying the best of my life

in The Ink Well2 days ago

I remember my conversation with my family during the festive period in 2019. When my parents said that they wouldn't be traveling to the village with us, that we would have to travel alone if we wanted to travel.

That evening, around 8pm, my daddy called us into the living room and said he wouldn't be going home with us, so that meant we would be going alone. We were very happy that he wasn't coming, but my brother had to ask what of my mother.

Mummy are you going with us asked my brother

What do you think asked my mom.

I am just asking ma, why are you frowning he said further.

In my mind, what's wrong with this brother of mine who sent him to ask.

I will be going with you guys. Do you have a problem with that? My mom asked, clearly upset with the question my brother asked.

No, I was thinking that you will stay with your husband if you travel with us, who will be cooking for him, he asked.

I just have to cut him short before he will use his mouth to spoil things for us and nobody will travel again.

Who told you that daddy can't cook? Is there a chef like Daddy in this house? I said, trying to calm the situation down.

My elder sister muttered under her breath, just close to my ear. You just scattered everything with what you just said now.

I didn't know when I shouted ha sharply, looking at my mom to make sure that she knew that I didn't mean what I said.

So what you are saying is that my food doesn't have taste or what? Please explain it to me, my mother said, glaring at me.

I just managed a small smile; that's not what I mean, my sweet momma I said, trying to make her smile.

When you say that your father is the best chef in the house, what does that mean? She enquires, staring at me directly, eyeball to eyeball.

Without thinking, I just blurted out that I only said that to hype my father, not that I meant it; I looked in my father's direction. Pleading with him to just understand me before his wife roast me this night.

Alright, my darling, you are the best cook ever, and you know that kids just say whatever comes out of their mouths without thinking my father said, bringing peace finally.

So, who and who are going to the village my Dad asked.

Both my cousin, Me, and my younger brother raised their hands.

Ok, Ada, you are not going, my dad asked my elder sister.

No, Daddy, I have an assignment in the office, I can't go she replied.

Ok, so when would you guys like to travel? My dad asked us.

30th sir, we all shouted in unison.

Ok, 30th it is then, go and start packing your things, my father said.

Happy that my father had agreed and we could leave, suddenly my mother said where are you all going? Have you heard what I have to say?

My younger brother, very sharp-tongued, had to still ask her, Mom, what do you want to say? Are you not coming with us anymore, he was frowning deeply cause he had a program to watch. We all know that my mother's talk won't finish on time.

If you like carry today's and tomorrow's face jam together, you will still sit down and hear what I have to say.

Well, I won't be coming with you all, cause I have programs in the church that need my present. You have to see how our faces lit up with joy, on hearing that she won't make it.

I know you all are happy but let me warn you all, don't take food from anybody, don't let anybody touch you on your body all in the name of greeting, secondly don't come back to the house late, as she said that she turns to look at my younger brother.

Mummy, what now my brother looks at my face to my mother's own.

You are the main culprit in entering the house late, she said.

Alright Mom, we have heard you and we promise to keep to them

That Christmas was the best I have had in years without my parents monitoring our movement or calling us every minute to come home.

I went to watch boat reggae, a diving competition, a water bike competition, and a dancing competition; I stayed out very late with my cousin and my brother. It was the best time of my life. I really had fun, it was like the holiday shouldn't end.

Thank you for sharing this lighthearted memory with us, @coolbabe88. We have a suggestion for making your blogs more readable. Adding quotation marks around dialogue helps the reader to keep track of conversation. Here, for example:

Ok, Ada, you are not going, my dad asked my elder sister.

This would read better if written in the following form:
"OK, Ada, you are not going?" my dad asked my elder sister.

We hope you can see the improvement in form and readability.

It was entertaining reading about how the children all wanted your parents to stay home, and yet were worried about revealing their secret wish.
