Wanted To Be An Early Bird.

in The Ink Well6 days ago

I stepped outside my hostel room to have a seat before doing anything for the day. It was a free day and there was nothing to do.
“Mrs Chidubem, assistant celebrant, how’s today going to be? You’re not even meant to be at home by now,”my hostel mates said to me and hailed me because I was the one who had the strongest relationship out of all of us.
Truly, it was my boyfriend, Chidubem’s birthday. Everyone knew I was in a very strong relationship with him. I’m the assistant celebrant because I spoke with him for over three hours during the midnight and the both of us have planned on what we want the day to be like.

I went back inside the hostel to wear my Jalamia gown. I boarded a bike to the cake shop to check if my cake was ready. Before getting down from the bike, I noticed that the cake shop was locked. It’s not even supposed to be on this day because I had promised my boyfriend that I will get to his place very early.

“Hello sis. I’m at the front of your shop now and I saw that it’s not open yet. Where are you,” I was trying to be calm even though my voice was shaky and I was already angry. I cut the call and sat on her shop stairs.

“She will come and meet me here,” I said to myself.

I was dozing off when I heard the humming of a car. It was the baker. My mood brightened up a bit because I knew I will get my cake, go back home to dress up and go to the venue.

“I’m very sorry ma. I had a meeting to catch up with…” I didn’t even listen or gave her a response. All I wanted was my cake and I planned not to go to her shop again.

The first unfortunate incident was that my cake wasn’t ready. No one knows how early I want to get to his place but she just ruined it. If I had said a word, I may ruin things between myself and the lady so I kept calm. It took her two hours to bake the cake and design it but I made sure to wait.

When I checked my wristwatch, it was 12:00 pm already. Time is far gone and I have to get early at the venue. I boarded a bike to the house and carried the cake carefully so it doesn’t fall or the design doesn’t get scattered.

“Oga abeg be very careful, nah cake I carry,” the bikeman nodded his head that he was going to be careful. Just one bump that the bike climbed, my cake fall at his back. I was very angry. After I told the bikeman to be careful but look at what he has just done. I was angry.

I got down from the bike when we got home and my friends were expecting the cake to look beautiful but it was the other way round. I fely bad but there is nothing I can do.

I didn’t have enough money to order a ride so I just used the public transport which is way cheaper. To get to the venue, I will have to board three buses. On boarding the second bus, another unfortunate incident happened and that was when I knew Lagos traffic can mess up your day.

I left my hostel about 1:30 pm. The venue is just two hours away from my hostel but how do I explain to my man that I spent five hours in the traffic.

“I’m stucked in traffic baby. I will be there soon,” he kept calling me and that was all I could say.
Why has the traffic decided to show up on this day? It was even in the hot season. Everyone in the bus kept on sweating including myself, I kept on checking my cake because the lady who baked it told me to keep it away from heat.
The design started melting because of the extreme heat but there was no solution. I cried in traffic and that was the most awful traffic experience I have ever had.

At last, I got to the venue by 7:00 pm at night. The event planners were packing the chairs already and I felt bad for getting there late even though it was not my fault.

“Don’t worry, it’s fine. At least, you’re here,” my mind felt relieved when Chidubem told me that. It was one unfortunate event upon another but I’m happy that I still made it to see my boyfriend on his birthday.

A series of unfortunate events that happened to you that day. There are times when everything bad that can happen to us happens. Despite everything, you arrived and were able to see your boyfriend on such a special day for him.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

Excellent day.

Bike men can be so annoying ehn...anyways...nice piece.

You're welcome.

A day that was supposed to be memorable in a good way for you was ruined by different forces.
Well, your man wasn't angry.
