Miss Blessing gives the pupils a time when they all can have their snacks before they treat another subject. She uses that as an opportunity to mark some test scripts which she has abandoned for over two weeks.
“Giovanni, can you give me some biscuits?,” Miss Blessing heard that from a pupil but wasn’t sure who it was.
“Who said that? Who’s begging from Giovanni?,” everyone points at Nicholas as she asks. Nicholas, a little boy of eight years old and from a wealthy family is seen begging in the class.
Miss Blessing finds it difficult to believe that Nicholas begged for biscuits in class. Without uttering a word, she heads straight to their lunchbox corner, brought out Nicholas’s and finds nothing in the lunchbox.
“Why didn’t you bring any snack from the house?,” Nicholas stutters as she asks. He didn’t know what to say but Miss Blessing walks straight to the tuck shop and gets enough biscuits for Nicholas so he doesn’t beg anyone for biscuits again throughout the day.
“Something happened in class today and I would love to call your attention to it,” the head teacher, Mrs Adebola on her recommended glasses, sitting majestically on her head teacher’s seat listens and nods her head in approval of the continuation of Miss Blessing’s complaint.
“Nicholas Okafor, the son of our PTA chairman was seen begging in class…,” Mrs Adebola bangs her hand on the table on hearing that.
“That’s unbelievable! How would you say that the son of the whole PTA chairman is begging? If I make my findings and this isn’t true, just know that your job is at risk,” she got angry then turned her face againt Miss Blessing.
Miss Blessing wouldn’t want to lose her job. Everyday in class, she puts her eyes on Nicholas but he still does the same thing. The head teacher, Mrs Adebola still doesn’t believe until Miss Blessing makes a video and shows it to her.
“What? How do we explain to his parents that their child is begging in class? We will lose a customer that way. Can you please help me get to the root of the matter,” Miss Blessing obliges right away and starts to make her findings.
Aunty Esther, Nicholas’s nanny and his mum’s younger sister who brings him to school everyday is sighted by Miss Blessing, rearranging his bag. Nicholas is an early bird and gets to school as early as 7:00 am. Since she has been given a task to keep an eye on him and why be begs in class, she resumes earlier than before.
Seeing Aunty Esther rearranging Nicholas’s bag continues to occur until Miss Blessing sees her taking away the snacks he brings to school everyday away from his bag.
“Bye Nicholas and have a good day,” Aunty Esther says and waves at him. Miss Blessing sees that Nicholas isn’t happy. The real Nicholas waves at Aunty Esther when she drops him at school every morning but not anymore.
“Hello, Aunty Esther, can I see you for a minute?,” Miss Blessing runs fast towards Aunty Esther to catch up with her.
“I saw you remove Nicholas’s snacks from his bag and I noticed that he’s been begging in class for some days now. Is there a reason for that?,” Aunty Esther laughs hysterically.
This gave Miss Blessing an idea that something is going on.
“Stay away from this. It’s a family issue and you’re just a mere teacher,” Aunty Esther walks away.
Miss Blessing runs fast to narrate what happened to Mrs Adebola.
“What? Where is she?,” Mrs Adebola asks but when they got to the class, Aunty Esther flees already.
“Ma, I won’t let this case die down. I won’t relent nor back down and I’ll make sure I reach his parents,” Miss Blessing tries all her best to reach Nicholas’s parents but they were futile. Nicholas’s parents now live in America so there’s no way to reach them.
Miss Blessing checks for their Facebook account, Instagram and every socials they can use but didn’t get them.
Aunty Esther comes to pick Nicholas on a Thursday afternoon, it was a bit early and the pupils were still in class, Nicholas’s mum’s call came in. She wants to speak with Aunty Esther and her son.
That’s the best time to strike.
“Aunty Esther, you can pass on the phone to me. The school doesn’t allow parents or guardians to come in the class,” Aunty Esther never likes the idea and doesn’t like Miss Blessing since she got challenged but do not want to cause a drama because of Nicholas’s parents on the phone.
Miss Blessing quietly copies the digits on Aunty Esther’s phone screen.
After school hours, she heads to Mrs Adebola’s office to share the number with her.
Mrs Adebola calls the number. Truly, it was Nicholas’s parents. She explains all to them and even sends them a video of their son begging in class, explains that Aunty Esther isn’t taking good care of their son and everything going on.
Nichola’s parents thanked Mrs Adebola and Miss Blessing im particular for not giving up on their son. They fly back to Nigeria and Nicholas begins to eat well again and stops begging for food in class.

That's a good effort by the teacher to get to the root cause of Nicholas begging in class. We want such teachers who care about the pupils and not just their pay at the end of the month.
It’s rare to see any teacher who cares about the child so if we find one, we should hold them dearly
You are right ❤
Thank you
