I am entirely open to stories with unconventional structure. However, a story with symmetry is always pleasing to my 'ear'. This story is perfectly symmetrical, balanced on either end by the theme of habit, and habit follows the narrator throughout.
In reading the story I thought a bit of Melville, and Conrad. They wrote so vividly of treacherous seas. You took us there. They lived the life. Have you? Or is this research? Either way, it works great.
Well, I am a nautical cadet, I have not yet sailed as such. I am waiting for my internship. So I have notions about sailing. I know what equipment they use on the bridge.
Although I have never been on a frigate or icebreaker, I had to research them. Partly in part the story is nurtured.
