So Long Suckers!

These days are loooooooong, but midsummer is here and Friday is off, so it is a three-day weekend ahead.

However, next week is the last week before the end of the quarter and unfortunately, due to a miscommunication between my supervisor and I which was discovered less than two weeks ago, in order to get my bonus, I have a metric shit-tonne of work to do before the end of the month of extra projects. While I like getting bonuses, what is worse than missing out on that, is not meeting professional deadlines - mix up or not.

I have been hammering hard away at it when I can, as despite the amount of work, there are other tasks that have been passed on to us as a surprise, costing me a couple days. And, because all of my projects are collaborative, what are the chances of getting anyone's time at the end of the quarter?

Oh well, fuck it - I am going to get it done.

I reckon that I work better under stress and short timeframes than when I have "all the time in the world" and I suspect that even without the communication confusion, I would have left it to the eleventh hour anyway. I tend to do it often and have done all my life, though I am trying my best to schedule and work ahead of schedule. Yet, in general, I am the stereotypical person who does a mass of thinking work in the first days and then, leaves all the practical work to the end, underestimating how long tasks are going to take.

My supervisor and I are quite different in this and while she is fantastic and highly organized, I am terrible at it. The other thing is, a lot of what I need to do is at the tactical level, where I am not very good, because I am far "too transparent" in what is happening, so rather than including the right people at the right time, I include everyone who should be interested, randomly :D I know what I need to do, it is just not in my nature to play those corporate games - but, I like getting stuff done, so I don't mind doing the work last minute and smashing it out.

The challenge in this case however is, it has to be quite precise (not my specialty) and due to the time constraints, I only get one pass at it before having to push it out company-wide to all stakeholders. Let's see how the rollout goes.

Nothing like a bit of pressure!

At least though, after all is done (or not done) I will get a nice holiday break of four weeks before having to face the music on it. I wonder how many messages I am going to get while I am out of the office saying, "what the fuck is this?" The work PC will remain off during that time though, so they can deal with an automated out of office message in the meantime.

Right... that is my cooldown from work - later it is the warmup for three days off!!

See you soon :)

It all depends on mood sometimes or how the body is been trained to adapt to such situations that might look convenient or probably will I say is comfortable depending on how it works for you.

I think the short timeframe changes my mood - gives me more resolve to get things done :)

A few times I tried front loading all the work. What I found: somehow that creates an avalanche of exceptions, options, test scenarios, etc, that ends up, oddly, being a pressure cooker throughout the entire remaining time.

So, procrastination, For The Win! lol

Your upcoming time off is the sweetest right as it starts. Almost there... and I hope you have the best time ever. Enjoy yourself and your time with family.

The other problem with having a long timeline is, there is so much feedback that causes changes - best say "this is needed yesterday" and have them accept! :D

Hopefully you have a good weekend too - mine is going to be filled with barbecuing and making Pavlovas :)

Exactly, indeed.

Ok, so I just looked up Pavlovas. Never heard of it and Oh my goodness!! Yum! That and barbecue is a winning combination.

I would have left it to the eleventh hour anyway.

You'd be surprised how many of us are on this table

More than the 12 Apostles! :D

I thought am the only one that procrastinates, and liked doing things at the last minute, even if I have something to do that was supposed to take three days, for example, and I had two weeks, I will wait, four days to the deadline before doing it. am working on myself to amend that, but one thing remains that no matter what I will deliver at the set time, I think I work the fastest and better in a short period of time.

I think 50 of the world at least are procrastinators - always time to put off today, what there won't be time to do tomorrow.

I think you and I are quite different as well :) I am highly organized and planned person about anything in life. However, I am not sure whether it is a good thing.

Besides, I don't like to do things in the last minute, but on time :)

I almost never schedule things that far ahead and tend to work better as it gets closer to deadline. I have always been this way, but, I am trying harder to be more organized (although I feel organized enough!) to be ahead of the power curve.

Good luck and enjoy that time off!

Switching the watch hand, getting used to back sleeping, time to maybe also up the organization work skills. Change is what helps us grow and keep growing.

My supervisor and I are quite different in this and while she is fantastic and highly organized, I am terrible at it.

Maybe get some help from her if you really need it, but you are pretty organized at your hive and crypto you just need to take it to work.
