Since Smallsteps was a baby, she has been interested in dinosaurs and even now, when I ask her what she is going to dream about, dinosaurs (and dragons) are the mainstays. It is because of this love that we took her to the Natural History Museum the other week to show her a little about what she has been obsessing over.
There has been an animatronics dinosaur show in our home city, but we weren't going to go, because it was quite expensive. However, when Smallsteps' friend's mum called to see if we wanted to join them, we decided to swallow the price and make the trip. While expensive, at least they said it would take about three hours to go through the displays.
Three hours if a seven year old reads every sign, watches every 3D clip, plays in the sandpit and eat something.
Suffice to say, that didn't happen.
The most time was spent lining to look at some poorly animated VR dinosaurs through goggles. These were placed at the end of the tour, and the first part took all of 15 minutes to travel through, even if stopping and reading some of the interesting facts.
Adults 22€
Children 20€
64€ for the experience. Which is more expensive than it was to go to the museum in Helsinki, at which we all agreed was a great visit and we want to return and spend more time there. This was well, not that. It is touring through Europe so if it does happen to be in your area, take a wide berth.
The dinosaur displays were lacking feeling, as they seemed just to be put there in the dark with some lights shining on them. They were animated with some basic movements and sounds, but it wasn't really engaging or immersive in any way. It was a bit of a letdown and even the kids were a bit disappointed.
However, outside the "entertainment" center, there is a nice park with a playground, so we went there, played for a bit and then got some ice creams. We spent more time playing in the park than at the show and it would have been better (and cheaper) for everyone if we had just done that instead.
But, all is not lost, as because it was an "event" all four parents were there and we spent a bit more time getting to know the other couple. We haven't spent too much time with the other parents, but meeting a few at the odd birthday party drop off and pick up tells us that there aren't that many we would want to see too often. This couple however, are decent and that is a massive bonus, since the kids like each other (for now) and we don't live that far from each other, so in time, they will be able to play more together and keep each other company. They also have a little boy who is about three.
I am glad we have a girl!
For now at least.
School starts again on Wednesday, so the holidays are really over for everyone and we will hopefully be able to get into more of a routine again, because it is hard at the moment without one. Next weekend however, it is going to be Smallsteps birthday, so we will have family and a few family friends over to celebrate with some cake, pies and coffee, which should be nice, as we don't seem to have people over that often.
But before that cake, I better get my lardy butt to the gym.

I also like the dinosaur since my childhood just like your little girl 😹
Yes school holiday's are almost about to end here too
And happy birthday to your little girl in advance 😃
I think it might be good to get the kids back to school - burn off some of their energy.
One time I went to a nightclub. I did not drink anything and it was way too crowded. The best part about that night was just wandering the city. Sometimes unexpected adventures are the best.
They are cool. I created a few dragons in my pieces. This one is my most recent dragon.
I wonder when the first dragon was imagined by a human and what inspired the thought.
Unexpected nights are generally the best nights.
Looks like an awesome time. Makes me want to go back to the museum as I only got a quick walk through a few years ago but loved every moment of it. Park and ice cream sounds like a great way to end it!
Museums are great! Next time we will put more time aside and dig around in the many drawers they had. We only got a chance to look at the main displays.
Too bad the display was disappointing. With all of today's tech there is no reason for that, especially at that price.
My birthday is next weekend too, the 11th. It makes me happy to celebrate with Smallsteps! ❤️
Happy Birthday for next week! Hers is the 13th. Which reminds me... the 14th is my wedding anniversary too! Ooops! :D
Dinosaurs are fascinating hurts that the museum did not meet expectations.
Yeah they are. Looking at the immense size, it is incredible they could eat enough to grow that large.
I’m with Smallsteps on this one 😂 those dinosaurs look cool I would want to see them too.
Happy birthday in advance to her also, I keep seeing new August born each day. Love that
Lots of lions out there it seems. They are pretty ferocious!
Couldn't agree more lol
She is a very brave girl, I feel scared just by looking at her photo. 😥😅😅
:D
The three year old was a little worried at first, then got comfortable.
Museums are one of the places to learn and explore. Your little cutie is enjoying it and frankly, dinosaurs make us all a bit giddy.
They are incredibly big, which is obvious. But standing next to a full size display made me realize how small we are.
f.y.i. - “dinosaurs” are as REAL as “Satan Clause”, “The Easter (ishtar) Bunny”, and “Outer Space”!
You don't believe in dinosaurs?
True! there is True scientific physical evidence for the existence of dragons 🐉, mammoths 🦣, and giant versions of mankind. the evidence for the existence of dinosaurs 🦖 is fraudulent and/or non-existent.
Dinosaurs are part of the religion of “sciencism”, along with “gravity” (as electro-magnetics/density) , “outer-space” (as heavens — above the firmament) and “virology” (covid-19). 🤔
ok
Lol
I was and am still also interested in them. I remember I had a book about them, which I don't know where it came from :) I read it many times and it was my only source about them.
Now I see how things have been changed.
I think every kid are very interested in dinosaur. In my case I was also interested in it. It's true that I have never seen dinosaur but the image of dinosaur created because of cartoons I have seen that times.
I think you guys enjoyed good time in museum. I don't like too much to visit museum but I think we can learn a lot of things from there.
The trip fell short of their expectations, but they did gain in other enjoyments. Children are always looking for ways to have fun and enjoy themselves. Of course, if they had known what they would find there they wouldn't have spent that money hahaha. But I still think it's worth it for the children.
... I would eat the cake first and then exercise hahaha.
Greetings and good week.
Still haven't paid for a VR experience. I wonder if I'm really missing out.
The museums that you've share looks so interesting! At least compared to those I went 😅
Any Dr. Blight this time round? 🤣
I too have had a close encounter with the dinosaurs. But I was paid pretty handsomely to go to the Tampa Zoo here in florida and haul those animatrons back to their home 20 in Dallas TX for maint/repairs.
Happy birthday In advance to Smallsteps☺️
I love how she picks an interest in dinosaurs.
64€ for three people is a very big money, convert it with my local currency it a lot of money but they is not a price one can pay when it comes to making your family happy, smallsteps and her friend am sure they have a very wonderful time there.
School will soon resume and the same routine continues
You brought a faint smile to my face with his constant complaining about how expensive the show was. If little Smallsteps is as fascinated by dinosaurs as my son Matthew is, I can assure you it was an investment to go to that show, and not a bad one.
In the world of children, simple things are fascinating and at that age, the questions of the world are born, the why, what for, what…, there will be a lot of questions, and you will feel stuffed…
I share your feeling that your first child was a female, my first child was a little girl called Sofy that I lost when she was barely ten years old, leukaemia did its thing… She filled every corner with multicoloured lights… That was almost eight years ago.
That is terrible. I have often tried to imagine, but there is no way to understand unless experiencing similar. My condolences, no matter how long it has been.
I am lucky that she is curious and inquisitive. I'd be disappointed if she would sit in front of the TV silent and unmoving all weekend.
If they are old enough, perhaps they remember seeing them for real? ;D
