Personally never paid up front for work to be done, however when people arrived wishing for fancy computer builds with sons business I requested half up front, client suddenly did not require such large personalized computer!
People have been caught mainly in building trade, having paving put into gardens was the main scam.
Oh yes, that's the way to do it. If they don't have the materials, or the tools then it is a no, no.

Yes, the building trade has gone for a loop as even "professional" paving companies hire mamparras to do the work. Then they get many call backs and they moan.
