Hello weekend lovers,
I hope you all had a nice weekend.
I am spending the first half of the winter in Spain. I was invited to see, to help out with and to photograph the olive harvest of this year. But I almost missed it. I planed to go to Spain in the end of November but the weather in the mountains turned quickly so the harvest already started when I still was in the Netherlands. It's very hard to predict the right time of harvest long in advanced. So I hopped on a plane and flew to Spain.
I took a couple of pictures of the harvesting with my camera and nothing with my telephone so I cant show you that jet. But it was a bit of a deception to be honest. I saw a harvest day in Morocco one day and there, whole families are helping out with the harvest. It's a big happening with family and friends and nice foods. Here there was one guy withe a electric rake kind of machine who was getting the olives out of the trees.
So we didn't do not much there that day. I did took a lot of pictures of the house and the land. The farmer wants to sell his property and needed good pictures for that. It was a fun job.
Hopefully I have my own olive farm next year and then I will show you how it's done.
But the day's after the harvest, people start pruning the trees. And a neighbor of us asked us if we could help him out with that. And so we went to his cortijo in the weekends and helped him.
My job was getting ride of those small green twigs around the tree. They suck up a lot of food and water while they don't contribute to the yield what so ever.
Look how thick this tree is. What a beauty.
Later on I could also cut some bigger twigs up in the tree. As a tall dutch guy that was very handy.
Wheelbarrows full of olive twigs.
Later that week we brought all the twigs to the local goatherd. they loved to eat the fresh green leafs.
Lovely golden colors of during golden hour in the field.
And the mountains colored beautiful red in the evening sun.
We slept at the cortijo and sat in front of a nice wood fire. Sleeping early because working outside makes you feel very tired.

That must be an hard work, good olive oil is pretty expensive
It was very good work. I love being outside when the weather is good :) And in Spain the oil is cheaper then the rest of Europe.
Yep, here in Italy it's like 16€/liter for good quality
Wow that's a lot. I bought 5 liters for 40 euros.

Looks like a lot of hard work at the farm! ;)
Hard work feels good 😅💪
