Deforestation is one of modern societies' biggest issues, although mankind has many big issues to deal with, most of which are not really being dealt with sadly.
Unfortunately, humans don't seem to have the ability to arrest the greed they feel and so keep using up the planet's resources as if they are endless. They are not, of course, endless.
It all seems to beading us to our demise, more rapidly than it needs to happen, however not enough is being done in the quantities it needs doing to get us back on track.

Apparently, our ego also prevents us from seeing that we do not have infinite time... as if at some point the solution will magically arrive.
And as you say, this is simply leading to our imminent demise. In a way, it's a bit sad to see this picture just being 20 years old, but I also try to stay optimistic about it when I see "rays of light".
For now, we are just spectators, so we just have to see how the elite handles all this :)

It's sad for all of us regardless of age, although the younger generation will have to see it decline ever faster I guess, I'll be dead before it all shakes out. We're moving in the wrong direction though, of that there is no doubt. People seem blind to it.
