This is an excellent example of luck, but also creating one's own luck I think.
Trips like this can be incredibly beneficial to a person's growth; travel tends to be a great teacher and I'm glad luck was on your side, and that you clearly deserved the trip because you tried a little harder than the rest, went over and above. It's a credit to you and I'm sure the trip was enjoyable, memorable and valuable.
