That's right @galenkp the span between them is said to be the longest in the world. I don't know if that has changed.

Yeah it's pretty sturdy. But I think it's designed to move with nature. Earthquake, typhoon etc.
Yeah, I'd say most constructions in Japan are built that way considering the seismic activity in the area.
